SOCIAL GATHERINGS
NEW LODGE OPENED;
The Loyal Keniuera. L<xlge, •-M.U., 1.0.0. F., have experienced a busy time this month, At tlie first .meeting a good attendance was recorded, second nomination ,of officers was proceeded with, and after the essential business had concluded, a most enjoyable time was spent ; with old-time dancing. Bro. J. A. Gray, P.G., in an appropriate speech welcomed the visitors and introduced the artistes. A very fine programme was then presented, the outstanding items of which were the "Poet and Peasant overture, a cornet solo, "Schubert's Serenade," given by Mr. C. Hayes,-a violin solo, "Serenade," by Mrs. F. Andrew and a piccolo solo, "The Lark's Festival," by Bro. H. Cocker, all of which were heartily applauded.-.- Between the instrumental items some well rendered songs were given by Mr. Reg. Fowler, Bro. Hall making an able accompanist. At tlie conclusion of the programme the hall was cleared for dancing,. Bro. K. Metcalf kindly adding to the enjoyment of tlie evening by presiding at the piano.
The Gordon Tent, 1.0. R., met at Onelumga on Tuesday evening, a good attendance being presided over by the Chief Ruler, Sister M. Campling. The quarterly reports and balance-sheets showed the Tent, to be in a good healthy position and still making progress. The election of officers resulted as follo\ys:—Past Chief Ruler, Sister M. Campling; Chief Ruler, Bro. F. E. Pace; Deputy Ruler, Sister T. Millbank; Levite Bro. Aske, juri.; cash and book stewards, Bros. R. Dixon.and E, Stewart; guardian, Bro. IH. Millbank; secretary and treasurer, Bro. LI. Campling. The officers, to supervise the juvenile Tent were reappointed. The officers were .then installed by {lie retiring P.C.R., Bro. "R; Millbank, assisted by Bro. A. Caddy. The newly-appointed C.R. thanked the members for the honour they had conferred upon him, and complimented the retiring Chief, Sister Campling, upon the very capable and efficient manner in which she had carried out her duties. The meeting was then closed and the members played a few games of bowls together.
There was an attendance of about eighty at the last meeting of the Loyal Morrinsville Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., and the splendid progress of the lodge was maintained by the initiation of a further sixteen members and one juvenile member. This makes a total of about fifty new members for the year, and several more have been proposed. Officers for the new term were nominated and will be elected at next meeting. A church parade is to be held at the Anglican Church "on November 29, whilst invitations have been accepted to visit the lodges at Matamata, Hamilton and Te Arolia. The installation of officers will be held on December 5, the- Strand Theatre having been engaged to hold the large crowd expected. Bro. R.T. Scott, D.G.M., and the district' officers, have notified their intention of being present.
A new Juvenile Temple of the 1.0. G.T. was opened at Onehunga on Thursday last in the Methodist schoolroom, Grey Street. Sister Ilodgkinson, G.V.T., accompanied by a number of the officers and members of the Endeavour Juvenile Temple, Auckland, attended, and presided over the gathering. .The Lodge was first officered by the visitors, and eleven new members were initiated, the ceremony being well carried out. - The new Temple was /then instituted and named, the chosen title being "The Youthful Enterprise Temple." The members then elected their officers, and the following had the honour of being elected ; and were duly installed: Chief Templar, Sis. Eileen Pace; Vice Templar Bro.' Arthur Cliadderton; Past Chief Templar, Sis. Marjorie Cavanagli; secretary, Sis. Gladys Simmonds; treasurer, Bro. Douglas Dobson; chaplain Bro. Irwin German; financial sec., Bro. Selwyn Rbwe; marshal, Bro. Simmonds; deputy, marshal, Sis. Gladys Pace; sentinel, Bro. Eric Barrett; guard, Bro. Allan Baker. A letter was read from the adult superintendent, Bro. J. Chadderton, who is still in hospital expressing his regrets at not being a e to attend the opening ceremony, and wishing the new Officers and members every success. Congratulations were also conveyed from G.S.J.W. Bro. Rennie, of Christchurch, Bro. Watts, and the Rising Hope Temple, Christchurch. Short addresses of advice and cjood wishes were given by Sis. LLodgkinson, Bro. Tuck and Bro. Pace. The newly-elected C.T. then conducted the closing ceremonies, after which light refreshments were served; Lhe new Temple is to meet' at present each Thursday -from G. 30 to 7.30 in the above hall.
The Epsom Lodge of' the - met on Tuesday last Bro. Coop, N.G., presiding over a large attendance members. Reports were , presented by the N.G. on a visit to Westmere Lodge, and by Bro. Powley on a visit to Avondale Lodge. Arrangements were made to continue these fraternal visitations the next Lodges chosen being Otahuliu and Star of Auckland.. Tic. degree master stated that a splendid attendance had been registered atthe degi ee meeting the previous week but the candidates were prevented from, being picsent. A full rehearsal of the ceremony was held, Bro. Mulholland acting as candidate. The work in this degree has now reached a very high standaid, a good deal of the success being due to Bros. Sutton and Patrick, who so ably carry out the dramatic portions of the ceremony.. This, added to the wonderful work accomplished by Bro. J. Whale and his four sons in the first and.; thud degrees, is making the Epsom Lodge room a popular meeting nights. Bro. Doull, V.G., of Star of Eden Lodge, conveyed fraternal greetings, the N.G. reciprocating. The meeting closed with a bowling match between an Epsom team skipped by Bro. Sutton, and a Star of Eden team, the former winning after a hard struggle. e serving of supper then brought a happy evening to a close. ,■
The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Dominion Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held in the Foresters Hall, Balmoral, on Tuesday evening. There was a very good attendance and two new candidates received initiation into the Order. The business for the. evening was smartly dealt with by "the N.G., Sis. O. Perkins, and at the close of the Lodge a social gift evening was held, in honour of two prominent members who are shortly to be married. Some very nice presents were received, and a veiy jolly evening.spent,with games and dancingno t forgetting the dainty supper, <■ ;
.Tlio.";Pride"" of Matamat"a~ Lodge, U.A.0.D., liad a most successful time -at tlieir-last , meeting. This vwas. the evening set aside "for the ritual competition for the District -Ritual - Shield, which tliis lodge won from Hotorua earlier in the year. The official judges were Bros. E. C. Dennis, district president. F. Hitch-! cock, 'P.D.P., -find W. S. Ruthe, P.D.P. Tlie whole'of the business, including the initiation ceremony, was judged, and' errors noted." • On the following Tuesday a visit was paid: to thcchallcnging lodge, Star of? Piako (Morrinsville), to see their performance. 4. .strong body .of officers and members, led by the A.D., were pre-' sent from Matamata,' others being' Bvo.. Philpott, of Hope of St. Albans, • Christchurch, and Bro. Spice, of Hawera.''Broi; T:Hunt,: A.D., presided, the attendance being excellent. One lady memberiwaa 1 -' initiated,, the ceremony being ably conducted". At-the close of the evening, Bro. 'Ennisy D.P., announced that Matamata had succeeded in retaining the shield, and congratulated them on their fine performance. He wished the Morrinsvillo Lodge better success next time', and said they had done well. Bro. Ruthe, in his remarks, particularly congratulated Bro. T. Makene, a Maori member of: the Morrinsville Lodge, .who went through his charge without a single mistake, and whom the judges classed as the best speaker in the too 111. Bro. Hitchcock concurred, and . said he was sure this Mao'ri brother would soon rise to. the D.P.'s chair., Item? were given in harmony by Bros. Collins, Cooke, Pritchard, Sheaf, J. Simpson and Hitchcock. .
Myrtle Rebekah Lodge, No. 4, 1.0.0. F., had a good attendance at its last meeting, Sister Tate, Is r .G., occupying the chair, and dealing with the usual buisness. Sister Newbold, P.L.D.D.G.M., in the unavoidable absence of Sister Boles, L.D.D.G.M.,., presented .Sister Kirvell, P.G., I *,with" the' jewel'' won in the recent ritual competition. Sister Kirvell suitably responded. ! Tlie usual greetings were" received and reciprocated, and in courtesy to the many visitors present, the members decided to forego the proposed mock initiation and an impromptu social evening was held in'its place. This proved a happy inspiration, and, with the.serving of supper, a. most enjoyable time was spent.
Tlie fortnightly meeting of the Otaliuhu- Lodge, Ti0.0.F., was held in the .Gas,'. .Company's. ..rooms, .....the..V.G.„, .Bro. Walker." .presiding, •*in. tlie absence on' leave of the N.G. Only essential buisness was transacted, and au early closure made. A large number of visitors were in attendance to celebrate the third anniversary of the lodge, a social and dance being- held. Several good items were rendered, and a nice supper helped to pass the time all too quickly, : a- very enjoyable time being spent by all,.
The Endeavour Lodge, 1.0. G.T., met on Wednesday evening, in the new lodgeroom, Unity Buildings, Upper Queen Street, the C.T., Bro. Moore presiding over a good attendance. One new member was initiated and warmly welcomed. A very fine gift was received from" Bro. Wood, consisting of three pedestals for the use of the officers. Bro. Wood was heartily thanked for his generosity the addition of this furniture making a great difference in the appearance of the room. A social cveningwas.. then • held, to celer brate'the taking over of the new room, and a very happy time concluded with the serving of supper.
•The Enterprise- Lodge, No. SO, 1.0. G.T., met at Onehunga on Thursday evening, Bro: Pace, C.T;,. .presiding. • Three new members received initiation, the impressive- ceremony being wel learned out. -Bro. Tuck gave a"-short" but forcible address on the great need for more sive temperance work and education, whilst the C.T. also spoke 011 the qnestion. The Vice-Templcr, Bro. Chudderton, was reported to be now making good progress. Bro.' Arden was also on the sick list, but was improving. When the business bad been finished, the members met for a social time arouml the supper table. 5
