"EAST OF BORNEO."
JUNGLE DRAMA FOR REGENT.
There will be screened at the Regent Theatre to-morrow' night one of the most remarkable outdoor films yet produced, "East of Borneo," a love drama enacted in the Malay jungle. Most of the scenes take place in the palace of the rajah, a picturesque ruin situated on the banks of a river infested with crocodiles. The effect is increased by an active volcano situated in the centre of a wild mountain range. The tale revolves around the love of a woman for her former husband, whom she follows to the jungle, where he has gone to forget, and of the covetous love of the rajah for her. The husband, stung by hie marital failure with this woman, seeks to forget by isolating himself from European civilisation in the jungle. He acts as personal physican to the rajah. His wife, feeling the return of a love which she thought was dead, tries to win her husband's affections again. It is a tense drama, starred by Charles Bickford, Rose Hobart, Lupita Toner and Georges Renavart. Actually filmed in the forbidding jungle of Malay, "East of Borneo" tells of the barbarous natives and their strange "voodoo" worship; of the party's desperate fight against ferocious crocodiles; of a native's battle with a leopard, of the depredations of panthers, hyenas and gorillas. The most awesome spectacle is that of a volcano belching forth smoke and lava, obliterating a whole town, and bringing a great palace in ruins to the ground. The film was produced by Universal Pictures, whose previous successes include "All Quiet on the Western Front," "King of Jazz," and "Seed."
