ROTORUA NEWS.

The first bivouac camp of the 18th Heavy Howitzer Battery of the New Zealand Artillery went under canvas on Tuesday morning for a week's training. Live shell practice will be carried out on the Atiamuri Iload on Thursday and Friday. At the end of the week the 20th Light Howitzer Battery will take over the camp. Sir Apirana Ngata is to open a new Maori meeting house at Te Ngae on Saturday morning. Work on this house has been proceeding for several months and the native gathering is expected to be an important one. It is possible that advantage will be taken of the meeting to elect the Arawa Trust Board members for the ensuing year. On Sunday last a working bullock swung its head as it was being handled by Mr. Phillip Waufjh, farmer, of Tuarekenga. and one horn penetrated his cheek, inflicting a painful wound necessitating his removal to the hospital. A fire totally destroyed a sawmill on Clayton Road on Friday night. The mill was owned by Mr. .Tohn Madsen and everything was lost. The loss is estimated at £1500. Anrietv was mused in town last week by the dismissal of 50 men from the Galatea Kstate by the P.W.8., as the number of unemployed in Rotorua already exceeds the capacity of the relief committee to find work. As a result of representations. however, it has been possible to transfer these men to other road works in the district.
