POSED AS DOCTOR.

SWEEPER AT NURSING HOME

LONDON, October 28,

Charged at West Ham with having falsely pretended to be a doctor, Charles John Powell, 21, of London, was fined £5.

The prosecution stated that Powell was a hospital attendant. He had had some medical education. . He was appointed surgeon in the liner Port Denison, "bound for Australia, by the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, to whom he applied under the name and qualifications of "Dr. Duncan Pick."

Powell attended a number of patients during the voyage, but nothing untoward happened. He arrived in Australia in June, and returned to England in August as "Dr. Pick," aboard the company's steamer Port Arthur, in order to attend the captain, who was suffering from heart disease.

Powell gave the captain good treatment, under the direction of other doctors. Later he wrote to the company admitting that he was not "Dr. Pick."

The Magistrate: This man, whose job is sweeping out a, nursing home, posed as a doctor on long voyages to and from Australia. If anything had happened to the patients he might have been charged with manslaughter.

NEW MARCONI RECORD. LILLIPUTIAN WAVE-LENGTH. ROME, October 28. Marconi created a nexv record in lilliputian wave transmission, when he conversed by wireless telephone, from the fishing village of Santa Margherita, with his brother, 10 miles away, using the amazingly low wave-length of half a metre. Hitherto 10 metres was the shortest wave-length to be used successfully, and Marconi's experiment was expected to lead to the cheapening of long-distance telephony, and relieve the congestion of the ether. However, the commercial use of the lilliputian waves is limited, as it cannot penetrate brick walls, or other solid objects.

The 8.8.C. is experimenting- on five and seven metre wave-lengths, and if the limitations are overcome, broadcasting will be revolutionised.
