FLAXMILLING INDUSTRY.

CABINET COMMITTEE'S TASK,

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)

WELLINGTON, this day,

The House was informed by the Minister of Finance yesterday that the question of assisting the flax industry has been referred to a sub-committee of Cabinet.

The Hon. W. Downie Stewart undertook to have referred to this committee a suggestion made in a question by Mr. V. A. Ward (Government, Invercargill), that urgent attention be given to the plight of the flaxmilling industry in Southland. The questioner stated that the president of the Southland Flaxmillers' Association was of opinion that the establishment or the subsidising of a bag-making factory would provide a use for available fibre and employment for many who were out of work in the district.
