PARNELL MEET GRAFTON
' Batting first after a delayed start, Parnell made a good beginning against Grafton at Middlemore. The wicket was fairly easy, and Hay and Whitelaw went steadily, but not sensationally, about the task of run-getting. At the end of an hour's play the total was a few over fatty, Whitelaw having a slight lead from his partner; Hay had a life when Byerley, at second slip, dropped him off Gowie, and soon afterwards Whitelaw sent a hot one back to Burke, which was not accepted. The pair carried the total to 69 before Hay was bowled by an in-swinger from Kerr, and Whitelaw followed soon afterwards, leg before to Horspool. McCoy tell to a fine catch by Cowie off his own bowling when he appeared to be going nicely, and Burt, who had been at the crease a long time for eight, departed with the total at 98. Hawkc went , cheaply, but Anthonv and Stehr then added forty lot the sixth wicket, the first named batting very -attractively. At the luncheon, adjournment the total stood at 147 for eight. Stehr ar.cl McGeehan started out quietly after lunch and at 2.30 the total stood at 177 without further loss.

KING'S POOR START.
A poor start was made by King's Old Boye in their match against North Shore at the College ground. Pearson was caught behind, off Coates, at the third ball of the game, and Charter went to a catch in the slips off the. same bowler, with the total at 6. Two more wickets went' cheaply, but then Morris, who had opened with Pearson, and Wilson, who hit out merrily-, took the tally into the fifties before the latter was caught in the outfield when trying a big hit against the wind. Three more wickets fell cheaply, and then Morris, who had offered a resolute defence, was •caught at silly leg. Palmer failed to score, and the innings closed for 104.
Shore also made a popr start and lost their first three wickets for under 20. Scores:— KING'S O.B.—First Innings.
