PONSONBY'S BAD START.

VETERANS TO THE RESCUE. SMITH AND SNEDDEN ADD 67. Ponsonby made a disastrous start against Y.m!c.A. at Eden Park to-day, three wickets falling for 15 runs. Subsequently, however, S. G. Smith and N. C. Snedden made a characteristic stand, and 67 runs were added before Smith was dismissed.

Monteith won the toss for Ponsonby, and Clarke and Fletcher opened to the bowling of Trevor Tyon and his brother, Harold. Trevor's first over was a maiden, but Harold, from the city end, yielded a four to Fletcher, this being the first score of the.match. Clarke opened his-account in similar fashion at the expense of the new coach, but soon afterwards the disasters began to occur. Harold Lyon's second spell yielded nothing, and with the fifth ball he clean bowled Clarke. Only two more . runs had been added ' when Trevor Lyon spreadeagled Monteith's wicket, and, with 15 on the board, Fletcher was taken at point, in attempting a square cut.

This-brought Smith and Snedden together, and these two " good companions ' of many an Auckland match made a valiant stand. The score mounted briskly, Snedden being strong on the off side, and getting four boundaries and a three out of five consecutive scoring shots. His partner also hit out freely, and roused the enthusiasm of the onlookers with a mighty off drive from Harold Lyon that went for six. Clark and Riddolls came on as change bowlers, and in Clark's fourth over Smith was clean bowled. The score was 82 for four—a considerable improvement on 15 for three.

Snedden did not long survive his partner, for, with only three runs added, Clark made his analysis two for 12, beating the old rep. player with a ball that' kept low: Snedden had hit seven fours.

The rest of the side did not offer much resistance, save for Lendrum. Burton was dismissed by a brilliant one-handed catch and Hoare was smartly stumped. Scores:—" . ' . PONSONBY—First innings.
