FIRST ROUND OF THE OPEN. SHAW BREAKS COURSE RECORD. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this. day. The New Zealand golf championships began on the Shirley links to-day in glorious weather, with the first round of the open championship, there 52 competitors. The course was oil the fast side. A. J. Shaw went round in 07, breaking the official course record by two. Butters took 70, which is four under bogey. Following are the best scores: —Blair, 71; .Wright, Rollins, 72; <T. L. Black, Macfarlane, 73; Millard, Sime, C. Clements, 74; Silk, A. R. Blank, 75; Duncan, Smith, jun., Branch, Toss will, 76; Lambie, Abernethy, J. W. Ross, 77; K. Ross, L. Ross, Mcintosh, Dyke, Seymour, Bott, 78; J. Clements, Forrest, K. Ward, 79; Bidwell, 80; Douglas, Mowat, 81; R. A. Wilson, 82; Hornabrook, 83; McCallum, Watt, 85; Fox, 92; Dawson. 93. Shaw jumped straight into top form, playing perfectly. His putting was sound and his driving almost mechanical. His figures were:—Out: 4, 4, 3, 5, 3, 4, 4, 4, 2—33. In: 3, 4, 4, 3, 4, 3, 5, 4, 4—34.
