WORK OF PARLIAMENT.
STATEMENT ON FINANCE. LIVELY' TAXATION DEBATE. CONDEMNATION OF CRITICS. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The House of Eejn-esentatives set out to-day to discuss a White Paper'containing the Finance Minister's recent supplementary financial statement, opportunity being provided by formal motion that it be considered by the Government. The introduction of otlier .important matters caused members to lose sight of their original purpose, a lively debate arising over the Land and Income Tax Amendment and Annual Taxing Bill, when Labour hotly criticised the replacement of a graduated land tax by a flat rate of one penny in the pound. This drew the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, and the Minister of Finance, the Hon. Downie Stewart, into a discussion with a vigorous condemnation of critics who failed to take note of the extraordinary conditions of to-day. A lengthy statement by the Minister in charge of unemployment also cut across the track of the main discussion, and when adjournment time arrived it lapsed, linlike a financial debate, which usually continues for many days.
