DR. D. S. JORDAN DEAD.

The death has occurred at San Francisco of Dr. David Starr Jordan, Chancellor Emeritus, Stanford University..
One of the world's authorities oil ichthyology and evolution, Dr. Jordan was born near New York in 1851, and was educated at Cornell University. He was professor of zoology at Indiana University in 1879, and president six years later. He then accepted the presidency of the Ireland Stanford, Jun., University, later becoming chancellor. He was an international commissioner of fisheries from 1003-10. He then turned his attention to the prevention of war, becoming chief director, of the World Peace Foundation (1910), and president of the World Peace Congress (1915). He was vice-president of the Eugenic Education Society of the Royal British Commonwealth of Nations Welfare Association. He wa6 also a member of the Academy of Sciences of Sweden. Dr. Jordan was the author of several hundred publications on. zoological and international welfare subjects. He was known in New South Wales, -where he belonged to the Nationalists' Club. He visited Auckland some years ago on a lecturing tour.
