CALLS OUTSIDE BOROUGH.
OTAHUHU FIRE BRIGADE
NEW ARRANGEMENT PROPOSED,
A deputation from the Manukau County Council waited on the Otahuhu Borough Council yesterday, to discues the fire protection for neighbouring local bodies. Mr. F. M. Waters, chairman, and Messrs. S. W. Rickards and S. House represented the Manukau County Council. ■ Mr. J. Trenwith, chairman of the OtahUhu Borcragk Council Fire Brigade, said fires putsid* the borough were giving the committee grave, concern. They had only one plant and ratepayers were left without protection when the engine went outside the borough. Their first duty wae to their own ratepayers, and the only solution was to duplicate the plant if the present service outside was to be given. To do this they had to have the assistance of neighbouring local •bodiee and outside firms. Manukau County would be asked to contribute £45 per annum. Mr Waters Said the question really concerned the Mangefe riding. They admitted their present donation was inadequate. Mr. Rickards said Mangfere was not i prepared to enter into a contract meantime, but was prepared to pay for services rendered. In only three streets in Mangere could a fire be .successfully fought. Mr. Graham said the fire engine might meet with an accident when outside the borough. It was too big a risk. If there was no agreement the counc. would have to forbid the engine being taken out of the borough. At Mr. Waters request a further conference was arranged to finalise arrangements.
