". • (Keceived 9.30 a.m.) SCARBOROUGH, September 9. The New Zealand cricketers to-day commenced a match against Mr. H. D. G-. Leveson-Gower's eleven at Scarborough. The weather is wintry and the wicket dead. Cromb, Vivian and Allcott are standing down from the New Zealand side, and the teams are:— New Zealand.—Lowry, Blunt, Dempster, James, Kerr, Mills, Merritt, Matlieson, Page/Talbot; Weir.' Leveson-Gower's. — Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Duleepsinhji, Wyatt, Leyland, Jupp, Allen, Larwood, Brown, Verity, F. Gilligan. . . : Lowry won the toss and the New Zealanders went in to bat at 12.10 p.m. The New Zealand batsmen made a somewhat disappointing showing. Mills, Page and Talbot were dismissed before lunch. Mills- was caught behind, Page at mid-off, and Talbot with an excellent catch by Duleepsinhji in the outfield. With only 53 rune on for four wickets, Blunt and Weir added 54 runs for the fifth wicket by steady batting after lunch. Lowry batted, brightly before being dismissed by a fine catch by Jupp at mid-on. Merritt again hit freely. Weir's wicket -fell last, Hobbs taking a brilliant one-hand catch at cover. It was a sound defensive innings, and .of the highest value to the side. He obtained his 1000 runs for the tour in first-class matches. A slow wicket rendered Larwood innocuous. He did not bowl at top speed. Brown,. although successful, was not., as steady as usual. Hobbs and Sutcliffe batted for 70 minutes before stumps.
