RECORD NUMBER YESTERDAY.

A record number of applications for assistance was made yesterday to the relief department of the Auckland Hbspital Board,. and again to-day the demands were considerable. The chairman of the board, Mr. William Wallace, is in Wellington endeavouring to,secure a substantial grant from the Government to meet the. position. He was advised by the chairman of the relief committee Mr. W. K. Howitt, this morning that unprecedented conditions ' obtained yesterday. There were 520 applications for relief, and 470 of them resulted from- unemployment. >
