"A crisis seems imminent," said Mr. J. Elliot, North Island workshops representative on the national executive of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, on hfe vet urn from Wellington, whcic he gave evidence before a Select Committee of Parliament in connection with transport licensing legislation. Mr. Elliot said that unrestrained competition with transport services not subject to awards or regulations was making it increasingly difficult for employers running regular services ii» conformity with awards and regulations. Where roads run parallel with railway lines the railways had to compete with truck service* and rate cutting. Mr. Elliot said that the railway workers welcomed the proposed legislation to control transport, and appreciated the fight for State servants which had been put up.
