MR. COATES OUT OF STEP.

SOUTHERN PRESS COMMENT

MR. DOWNIE STEWART'S LEAD,

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

CHRISTCHURCH, this day.

Commenting on Mr. Coates' reply on the subject of fusion, the "Christchurch Times" editorially says: "The Leader of the Reform party has once more revealed himself to be out of step with the public. All sound elements in the country have rallied to the support of the Prime Minister, and if the statements of the quondam Reform supporters themselves can be accepted, there is to-day scarcely such a thing as a Reform party. In the constituencies, indeed, we may go so far as to say that of sincere supporters of Mr. Coates himself there are none, and what little following Reformers . can find in the country is the personal following of Mr. Downie Stewart. If Mr. Stewart were to follow the inclination very plainly revealed in his speech on the financial statement and give his direct support to the United Government, the fusion of anti-Labour forces would be complete in a few hours."
