"SAFETY FIRST."
LESSONS FOR CHILDREN.
ADVICE FROM A.A.A.
TOLL OF FATALITIES.
The. Auckland Automobile Aseociation has always been vitally concerned with the mounting toll of fatalities on the streets and highways. Since the early days of the motor car it has been realised that while modern highways were essential for the welfare of. the community, it was equally important that traffic should be thoroughly controlled and the drivers of motor vehicles should be educated with a view to securing a maximum degree of safety for both the motorist and the pedestrian.
The A.A.A. is continually releasing safety first propaganda and has now inaugurated a eystem of safety first lectures to school children. Uniformed patrols are visiting the schools throughout the Auckland Province, children on the various phases of sa?ety first and interesting them in the principles of the avoidance of etreet accidents. In a very effective way, the children's attention is attracted' by coloured sketches and diagrams illustrating a typical country scene. The instructor first describes the danger. He then illustrates the position on the coloured sketch, then demonstrates how an accident is caused and describes how it can be avoided.
The children are then brought in front of the class to stage imaginary accidents and finally the class repeate its lesson, and after the instructor has left, the pupils are invited to write an essay on "Safety First." That the children are keenly appreciating these safety first lectures and that the lessons are takin" effect is shown from the many remarks of children in their homes which are repeated by parents to officers of the association. . This week a patrol is visiting the schools at Devonport, Takapuna and Milford, and after the holidays, will visit Northcote, Birkenhead, Glenfield and Albany.
