TENNIS RANKING.
THE NEW ZEALAND POSITIONS.
AUCKLANDERS PROMINENT
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
WELLINGTON, this day,
Auckland fills seven of the top 20 places in New Zealand tennis and Canterbury has four names on the list of the New Zealand ranking for 1930-31, just issued by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. Wellington shares the lead with seven.
Auckland fills top places in men's and women's lists, and in each place a Wellington player is runner-up. As far as actual ranking is concerned, on paper Auckland was the strongest side in New Zealand in women's tennis when last eeason closed, while Wellington was slightly the best in the men. But the fallacy of paper listing is shown by the fact that neither of these provinces actually holds the trophy which would confer supremacy in those fields. A vitally important modification of the list is caused by the recent removal of Mrs. H. M. Dykes, Auckland, number one in the ladies list, and New Zealand singles champion, to Wellington. The capital city now has the first three ladies on the tanking list and five of the first ten, every one of them holding or having held a New Zealand championship. The list is as follows:— Men.—l A. C. Stedman (Auckland), 2 D. G. France (Wellington). 3 C. Angas (Canterbury). 4 N. R. C. Wilson (Wellington), 5 E. L. Bartleet (Auckland), 6 Dr. J. T. Laurenson (Waikato), 7 A. L. France (Wellington), 8 H. A. Barnett (Canterbury), 9 T. W. Patterson (Canterbury), 10 N. G. Sturt (Auckland). Women.—l Mrs. H. M. Dykes (Auckland), 2 Miss D. Nicholls (Wellington). 3 Mrs. R.. P. Adams (Wellington), 4 Miss M. Macfarlane (Auckland), 5 Miss B. Knight (Auckland), 6 Mrs. Wellwood. nee Miss M. Myers (Wairarapa), 7 Mrs. W. J Melody (Wellington), 8 Miss M. Wake (Canterbury), § Miss J. E. Ramsay (Auckland), 10 Mrs. N. Thomson (Wellington) Newcomers to the ranking list are H A. Barnett and Mrs. Dykes, who was hot ranked last year, though, of course, she has figured on the list in previous years. A notable absentee is Miss May Andrew Canterbury triple champion and past New Zealand doubles champion, and her omission in favour of Mrs. Thomson does not appear jushfied, as the Wellington lady has not played much hard tennis in the past season.
