LOCAL BODIES.
AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD. The Auckland Harbour Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. G. R. Hutchineon presiding. St. Mary's Bay Road.—The board gave authority to the City Council to proceed with the formation of road access to the St. Mary's boat harbour. The board decided to inform the Labour Department that the work would be proceeded with as soon as the guarantee was received from the Unemployment Beard. Mr. Hutchinson said that there would be sufficient work to keep 50 men engaged for probably two months. j Sailors' Home. —A donation of £25 was made to the funds of the Auckland Sailors' Home. Power Charge.—The board granted the request of the Naval Department for a reduction in .the charge made for a supply of electric power at Calliope Dock. Port Building Insurance. —The recommendation of the finance committee that the new Port Building be insured for £20,000 was agreed to by the board. Land for New Road. —The board's engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, said that he saw no objection to the taking by the City Council of a small area of land on the shores of Hobeon Bay to be used in the new road connection between Shore Road and Orakei. The question of maintenance costs was referred to the finance committee. ONE TREE HILL BOROUGH. The council of the One Tree Hill Borough met last night, the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, presiding. Sale of Bread.—A letter was received from the Department of Health with reference to the retailing of bread on premises totally unsuitable for the proper sale of such wares. The report of the inspector was that in One Tree Hill bread was not being sold under the conditions complained of. So far as_ he was able to ascertain bread was being sold in 36 shops in the district, and in all cases it was being handled under good conditions. Concerning the sale of stale bread, the shopkeepers had informed him that the master . bakers were always willing to take the etale bread back again and allow for it. He suggested that all retailers selling bread be required to keep it in glaes receptacles, and that the master bakers satisfy themselves as to whether the persons to whom they supplied the bread for resale eold it under satisfactory conditions. Milk Shops.—The Health Department also wrote, stating that complaints had been received that some milk shops were being used as collecting agencies for bootrepairing companies. The inspector reported that there were no milk ehops being used for that purpose in the borough. Hawkers' Licenses. —The Mayor moved that, at the approaching conference of local bodies, it be a recommendation from the representatives of the One Tree Hill Borough Council that the Government be asked to legislate more strictly in the matter of the issuing of licenses to hawkers. He suggested that the licenses be applied for annually, and that their operations be generally restricted, since local bodies found it rather difficult to dealt with them adequately. Further, the licenses should be issued by the police. The motion was adopted. Building.—The inspector's report stated that, since the beginning of the year, 55 permits had been issued to the total value of £3898 7/. Five permits had been issued since June 27, value totalling £1400.
