TRAIL OF CHEQUES.
MAN AND WIFE ARRESTED. END OF MOTOR TOUR. WEEK'S REMAND GRANTED. A poorly-dressed couple, Thomas Kelly and his wife, Mary Kelly, appeared at the Police Court this morning. Thomas Kelly was charged, on eight informations, with obtaining goods and money by means of valueless cheques, and failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation, while his wife was charged with attempting to obtain a motor car, worth £50, by a valueless cheque, and, at Wanganui," on June 24, obtaining a bottle of whisky and a bottle of stout by similar false pretenses. Mrs. Kelly pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said both accused arrived in New Zealand from Scotland in 1925. About a month ago they left New Plymouth in a motor car, and went as far north as the Ninety Mile Beach, leaving a trail of valueless cheques in their wake. Mrs. Kelly had issued other worthless cheques, knowing that she had no money in the bank to meet them. She had £2 when arrested. "It is curious for such a couple to travel in a car on such a trip," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Thomas Kelly, for whom Mr. K. C Aekins appeared, was remanded for a week. Mrs. Kelly was remanded for sentence on the same day.
