BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL
ESTIMATES-FOR-THE YEAR. Finality has been reached by the Birkenhead Borougli Council regarding the financial requirements for the ensuing year. The estimates adopted require a consolidated-rate of 6|d in the £ on the unimproved valu6 of £.547,802. Of this 3 3-8 d is for the payment of interest and sinking fund on loans for waterworks and- road improvements, |d for payment ofAuckland hospital levy, and 1-iCd for Auckland Memorial Museum levy. The balance of 2 9-16 d; is for general purposes, including public works £2775, street lighting £450, fire protection- £375, interest and sinking fund on the £2700 unemployment loan £307, arid reserves upkeep £300.' The total expenditure in the general account allowed .for, including repayment of the overdraft of £2055, is £8053, and the estimated revenue, inclusive of rates in arrear of £2500, is £7706. Though the wages cut saved £325 and the ho.anital levy was £195 less, ■ these reductions in expenditure were more than counter-balanced, by reduced valuations exceeding £3000, the unemployment loan annual charges, and the first levy by the Fire Board of £353. For the maintenance of the water supply an expenditure of £1528 is provided. The usual charges are to be continued, and T2ceiptß are set down at £2063, this amount including the credit balance of £998, and outstanding rates' £215. fhe'panitation charge is to be 35/ for the Vear. Tt is anticipated that the vntcfi outstanding will be collected this .year.
