COAL FOR RAILWAYS.
NORTH AUCKLAND ORDERS. SMALL MINES AFFECTED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. The suggestion that the intervention of the Chamber had resulted in the Railway Department placing four coal orders with the Whau Valley Collieries, and decreasing the orders from his Kiripaka mine, was contained in a letter from Mr. Doel, as received by the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce last night. The Secretary reported having interviewed the Minister of- Mines, the Hon. A. J. Murdoch. The Minister had asked for a copy of the resolution passed at the previous meeting of the Chamber, and promised to interview the Minister of Railways with" a view to having the utmost possible done for these small mines of the Whangarei district. The idea was that n6 existing orders would be decreased. ■: < The chairman said that the Chamber co.uld not go further than advocating national support for local mines. Mr. R. H. Allan said that Mr. Doel had interviewed the Hon., W. A. Veitch, Minister of Railways, and it did not appear that'anything further could be done at present. It. was decided to acknowledge Mr. Doel's letter and explain the attitude of the Chamber.
