WAIHI NEWS.
Ten unemployed men—five from Waihi and five from " Paeroa —have been plnc-ed at work by the Public Works Department on the deviation near Williamson's property at Whangamata. About 150 persons will shortly be employed at the Government afforest.uion nurseries and tree planting near Whangamata. A youthful Maori. Sonnie Whitiker. of Mataora Bay. near Waihi, was charred in the Waihi Court with cruelly ill-treating a. horse. Accused had purchased the animal at the Waihi pound for 2/6 and subsequently tied it up near his home, and then left for Paeroa. where he remained for some days and evidently forgot about the animal. The horse had had no water and little to eat for nearly three days and was found dead. Defendant was given an excellent character and had not appreciated the seriousness of his neglect. The magistrate, in ordering accused to na.v costs, added that the" horse must have been very feeble when it had been purchased for 2/6. Following a dispute and alleged assault which had taken place in a hotel, a elaim for £7 damages was made in the Magistrate's Court .yesterday against William Rudd by Peter McConnell. The evidence showed that Rudd was accidentally knocked down. On getting to his feet he ordered JfcConneJl out of the hotel, strikin; him in the month and knneking a dental plate on to the floor. The magistrate gave judgment for the amount claimed with cosrs.
