BOXING.
HUGHES-DONOVAN BOUT. Southern critics have been loud in their praises for Archie Hughes in his manner of defeating the two imported American boxers, Thomas and Whitlow, and have predicted that Tommy Donovan will have to show his best form to date when he meets Hughes at the Auckland Town Hall next-Monday evening. Within a few weeks 'Donovan will meet the Americans, and his contest -with Hughes is expected to throw some ; light on his chances against them. Hughes, who is training nightly at the Parnell gymnasium, is showing plenty of speed and cleverness in his workouts, and those who have seen him in action pick him to beat the New Zealander. Donovan is training in the South, and reports to date state that he is in excellent form. He is confident that he can beat Hughes and thus pave the way for decisions * over the Americans. An excellent amateur programme will support the main event. The box plan opens at Asher's, Shortland Street, on Thursday morning.
