NEW SPORTS GROUND.

MT. EDEN INCINERATOR SHE. LIVELY DEBATE BY COUNCIL. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED. The proposal to convert the whole of the pit area on the northern slopes of Mount Eden into a sports ground, from Clive Road to the mountain entrance, and that men from the No. 5 scheme be employed on the work of filling in and levelling encited considerable discussion at last evening's meeting of the borough council. The Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, made the proposal, consequent on the receipt of a request from a city football club asking the council to consider levelling the lower portion of the scoria pit to provide playing areas for both football and cricket. Mr. Potter said the scheme would mean the closing of the pit for all time and the finding of another site for the incinerator. It would also complete the work of remodelling and levelling the old scoria pit and would cVange the'appearance from Clive Road. Mr. W. G. Lange agreed with the Mayor, but Mr. S. E. Chappell thought the matter should be reviewed as the step would close the pit. It was necessary for them to build an incinerator on a site which would please all. The Mayor explained that this was the opportunity of a generation. By using unemployed labour they would be getting the work done for nothing. It was time the incinerator in the pit was done away with. The work was already commenced and as far as the incinarator went he had another site to suggest. Several other speakers' were of the opinion that no step should be tak;n until a site for the incinerator was named, but the Mayor preferred not to name a site in open council. Mr. W. H. Nagle moved as an amendment that the proposal be referred to the works committee for report. Mr. A. M. Bryden, however, was of opinion that the work should be proceeded witn as it was providing employment for the borough's unemployed.

"There seems to be an insinuation that we want the work to stop," said Mr. Mills, rising to a point of order. On being asked to whom he referred, Mr. Mills said: "The Mayor and Mr. Bryden." Mr. Potter: I must ask you to withdraw that remark. . I can't have you casting reflections on the chair. The motion was put to the vote and was carried, and the Mayor moved a further motion, which was carried, lhat the work on the lower level be proceeded with.
