IN QUEUES.
UNEMPLOYED RE-REGISTER. NEW INQUIRY FORMS. INVESTIGATION OF BONA FIDES. Men stood in queues at the Labour Bureau this morning to again register for work. Since the cessation of scheme No. 5 it is necessary for all men seeking employment to re-register. A new. application form is being used and in addition each man is required to fill in an inquiry sheet. There x are 25 queries to be answered by applicants.
Explaining the new system this morning, Mr. Geo. Finn said that it was made necessary owing to a number of ineligible men getting work under the No.. 5- scheme. The Labour Department was putting on men to verify statements on the inquiry sheets, in order to protect the genuine unemployment man. It was anticipated that the cessation of work for two weeks would go a long way towards balancing the unemployed budget. It was necessary to ration relief work in order to make the money last. When the board was set up, there were 7400 men registered. Now there were 35,000. When Xo. o scheme was commenced, 17,000 men were on the register. Mr. Finn said that under the new scheme single men would have two days' work each week, while a married man maintaining a wife and not more than two children under 16 years would be given three days. Married men with a wife and three or more children under 16 years of age would get four daj's' work a week. A widower with dependent child or children under 16 years woul dbe treated as a married man. Otherwise he would be treated as a! single man. !
