EASTER OFFERINGS.
The idea underlying the old custom of handing the Easter offertory to the vicar seems to be a thoughfful and generous attempt on the part of the laity to reimburse the clergy for out of pocket expenses during the year in the actual running of the parish. Without pretending that they are more charitable than other folk, it cannot be denied that-parish clergymen have to find ready cash in many small ways for incidental parish expenses. Then, again, though one must be just before he is generous, some charitable demands amounting to pounds simply have to be met from time to time by the clergy, especially in the winter. Moreover, if Hawke's Bay churchmen ihad to depend on what their brother clergv could send them, their recoverv would be slow. A COUNTRY VICAR
