BLACKBERRY PICKING.
WORK FOB UNEMPLOYED. MEN'S SUCCESSFUL SEASON. The picking of blackberries provided nine of Auckland's unemployed with a lucrative source of revenue for a fortnight, during the recent season. A scheme was evolved, by Mr. V. Watson, who was also responsible for the employment of 9S men cutting grass seed, and with the help of a subsidy from the Labour Department, the men cleared expenses, and, in addition, made about" £4 a week each. Paying all their expenses, the men went to Paeroa, where there were blackberries of good quality in great quantity. They Avorked seven days in the week and between 12 and 13 hours a day, and at. the end of the fortnight had picked 70 kerosene tins full of the berries. Each tin averaged about 301b. They had made arrangements with an Auckland firm which paid them 2sd per lb for the fruit. Mr. Watson said that the residents of the district had treated the men exceptionally well, and at Paeroa they had been lent a house, where they camped the fortnight.
