SWIMMING.

PONSONBY HARBOUR RACE. RAPER FIRST AND FASTEST. In cold, inclement weather on Saturday the Ponsonby Amateur Swimming Club held a carnival at the Shelly Beach baths. The big event of the day was the harbour swim for the Wai Wai Shield, over a course of three-quarters of a mile, from Western wharf to Shelly Beach baths. The successful competitor was A. Raper, whose time was 20.15, with a handicap of one minute. D. Smith (one minute) finished a very close second, being about a second behind, and Noel Crump (scratch) filled third place. The race eommenced at about 3.45 p.m., and the gross time was 24.15. Fourth, fifth- and sixth places were filled by D. Skelton (2.5), T. Hambrook (sni), who, by the way, was the youngest competitor in the race, being only 12 years of age, and E. Deiman (2.30) respectively. Ten competitors started and eight finished.

Of the chief events decided in the baths, the 100 yds club championship was won by A. Raper by a touch from W. Smith. Miss J. Smith succeeded in annexing the 50yds ladies' club championship by three yards from Miss F. Holt. The handsome Leys Memorial Cup, presented by Sir Cecil Leys, in honour of his father, who was former patron of the club, was won by W. Johnston. Smith (7s) 2. Perrin 3. Time. 70s. Auckland Ladies' Diving Championship (Regent Cup), standing and running.—Miss Dowman was adjudged the winner. Junior Boys* Handicap.—J. Brotherton (Ponsonby) 1, D. Shanahan (Waitemata) 2, P. Shanahan (Waitemata) 3. Time, 40 l-ss. Final Point Score Race, for cup, 100 yards.—R. Moore 1, T. McCarthy 2, H. Neale 3. Moore was the eventual cup winner.

NORTH SHORE CLUB'S GALA.

Next Tuesday night the North Shore Amateur Swimming Club will hold the final carnival of the season in the Tepid Baths, the proceeds of which will be donated to Jasper Calder's shelter shed fund. The club, has, as usual, drawn up a varied and attractive programme, and the bill that is to be presented should appeal to all. Among the chief numbers will be an attempt by Gordon Bridson to lower his own 100 metres New Zealand record of 645, an attempt by Noel Crump to lower the 100 yards New Zealand jiroior boys' record of 63 l-10s, at present held by W. Jarvis, and the final of the Auckland water polo fif'W championship between Ponsonby and Waitemata; while thrilling .races should be seen between Misses M. Farquh,T\ T Stratton, P. Robertson, M. Smith, S. Brown and B. Lewin in the 50 vards ladies' Aupklniul d'-- • ' ---hip and 100 yards ladies' Fuller Cup handicap. The final of the Auckland Water Polo Senior Grade Championship, held under the auspices of the Auckland Water Polo Board of Control, will be decided a* this gala.
