BOWLS AND BOWLERS.

ECHOES FROM EASTER. FIRST YEAR PLAYERS. WIN FOR WAITEMATA. ' Bowlers were unlucky last Saturday, having again the exasperating experience of just missing, by 24 hours, one of the finest days of the whole season. However, it might have been far worse, for up till one o'clock very few could anticipate a game at all, whereas bright sunshine during a good part of the afternoon, coupled with a light breeze that had fortunately turned to the dry quarter, made the conditions fairly pleasant. It cleared up just in time to enable the curtain to be rung down on the Easter tournament, and congratulations are due to the Waitemata nnk for their comfortable win fn tho First-year Fours. It shows how hard it is to win in Auckland when it is recalled that the Waitemata Bovyjing Club was formed 31 years ago, and has always included a very fair sprinkling of good players in its membership roll, and yet this is the first Centre tournament that the club has ever won, although the Centre has been conducting five tournaments every season, and seven in recent years. There are still nearly a dozen clubs in . the Auckland Centre who have not yet wort a Centre tournament, but -this fine win for Waitemata will encourage them to realise that it is perseverance and careful preparation that counts, and that the race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong.
