KIRK-WINDEYER CUP. POSTPONEMENT OF CONTEST. ATTITUDE OF N.Z. COUNCIL. \ . , (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. There will be no Kirk-Windeyer Cup contest this year, if the wish of the New Zealand Golf Council is carried out. The council has cabled the Australian Golf Council, which last year assumed control of the Cup contests, suggesting that in view of the general economic situation it would be wise to postpone the contest this year or abandon it altogether. Two factors have contributed to this decision, first of them being the fact that the liawke'a Bay golf clubs have suffered severe losses through the earthquake and the council feels that assistance should be given to them with whatever funds are available. The money that would be spent on sending a team to Australia to defend the cup which New Zealand won back from New South Wales last year thus will be devoted to assisting Hawke's Bay golf clubs. In addition, the council has circularised member clubs of the New Zealand Golf Association inviting them to contribute to the movement to grant relief to the distressed clubs in the earthquake-smitten areas. A second reason for abandoning the trip to Australia is that three of the men who are almost certain to be in the team are not, available for a visit to Australia this year. This would mean that a new team of five players would have to be picked, only one past representative being able to make the trip. This in itself would not be sufficient reason for abandoning the ,match, nor is it the principal reason, now, but the two together make the Golf Council feel that the international golf fixture' should be transferred to next year. i
