BRILLIANT FUNCTION.

BALL AT MANUREWA.

The charming grounds of Manurewa House, the home of the Earl and Countess of Orford were gay with Chinese lanterns and brilliant with flowers and beautifully scented plants last evening, when the Countess of Orford gave a ball to a large number of guests. The tennis court had been selected for the site of a large marquee, in which dancing took place and the interior was lit with large standard lamps, which threw a soft glow over the pretty frocks worn by the dancers. Massed in corners, to add to the decorative effect were large masses of graceful flax plants, while one end had been converted into a iounge where those not dancing could enjoy themselves. • The drawing room was used as a card room for those who preferred • bridge and supper was arranged in another marquee on the lawn. This was decorated with a profusion of beautiful dahlias, whose. colours displayed all the. newest and gayest shades. An orchestra provided enjoyable music throughout the evening. ' The guests were received on their arrival by the Earl and Countess of Orford, the latter charmingly gowned in oyster satin beaute worn with turquoise ornamsnts. The gown was made very simply 3rd gathered in front with an oriental buckle. A fur-trimmed coatee of biack and orange brocade was also worn. Lady Anne Walpole, who was present at the dance for a short while, woie a frock of white spotted organdie with frilled . skirt. and white sash; Mrs. T. FT. Oakes, was in black ring velvet with frilled side panels and Miss Seth Smith wore earacen red chiffon with shoulder cape.
