(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

CAMBRIDGE, this day,

A tragic motor fatality occurred on the Horahora-Maungatautari road late yesterday afternoon, when a well-known Horahora farmer, Mr. Alfred William ■Jlead, a married man, aged 54 years, was killed. He broke his neck as thk result of a light delivery truck lie was driving skidding in loose metal and capsizing down a steep gully.

Mr. Head was travelling with his wife, son and several others, who were returning home from a picnic at Okoroire. When they reached a spot about 10 miles from Cambridge the vehicle, in rounding a sharp coner, swung out wide, skidded in sand and loose metal, and went over the side. It somersaulted several times in its descent into the gully. Mr. Head was thrown clear, but it was immediately seen that he was gravely injured. He died within a few minutes.

Mrs. Head, and her son, George Leslie Head, were badly shaken, but otherwise were uninjured. The vehicle was badly smashed.

The deceased was a well-known and popular farmer of the district. He was born in Berkshire, England, and with his wife came out to New Zealand twenty-four years ago. He settled in Devonport, but took up farming at Horahora in 1916. He has resided there ever since. He leaves a wife and family of five. An inquest is to be held.
