NAPIER RENTS.
EXPLOITATION FEARED
PROVISION FOR EMERGENCIES,
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, Monday.
The Prime Minister was asked by Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier) in the House to-day to include in the proposed earthquake legislation some provision for regulation of rents by a tribunal, to prevent possible exploitation.
The Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes replied that there would be provision enabling the Government to meet any emergency. As for rents, he was informed that a great many people were still absent from Napier, so that one would hardly think that rents would be on a rising scale, but rather on the decline, as a number of houses must be unoccupied. However, the legislation would be very wide and any exploitation could be dealt with, thought he felt sure that the good sense of people with houees to rent would enable the position of tenants to be met.
