RESTORATION OF CHURCHES
INACCURACY OF STATEMENT.
(By Telegraph.—rress Association.)
GISBORNE, Saturday,
A statement that the report from Napier with reference'to the churches was inaccurate was made by Bishop Williams, of Waiapu. Bishop Williams said a proposal had been made to erect a temporary building to hold from 400 to 500 people. This would cost a good deal more than the £500 stated. No plan had yet been formulated for the reerection of a permanent cathedral, mention of 10 years being purely guesswork.
With regard to the diocesan buildings, the cost would run into thousands of pounds, but the survey was not yet complete. St. Augustine's Church had not yet been repaired and was very far from being fit for use.
