SIMBA AND HIGH COMEDY SCORE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

PALMERSTON IST., Saturday.

The Manawatu Racing Club's autumn meeting opened to-day in fine weather and the track was fast. The totalisator handled £15,753, compared with £26,015 on the first day last year, a decrease of £10,262. The Double, Ball Dress, a South Islander, was at nearly double figures for the Prince of Wales Handicap, in which Toxeuma (£393) and Kahikatoa (£277) were most fancied. High Falutin' (third fancy) and Rory Mor were left at the barrier. Ball Dress, always well placed, _ followt Moutoa Treasury into the straight, next in line being Kahikatoa, Royal Parade, and Toxeuma. Ball Dress then drew out, and won by a length from Royal Parade, who beat Toxeuma by a head. Kahikatoa, Moutoa Treasury, and laitonu were next. Consent (£735) and Autopay (£673) carried the bulk of the money m the sprint (Johnston Memorial). Pakitere and Autopay made the running to the straight, where Consent and Just an Idea were'handy. Autopay went away to win by half a length from Consent, who beat White Fang, who finished fast, by two lengths. Pakitere and Chrysology were next. The W.F.A. Race. Nightmarch. was entrusted with over half°the investments in the Awapum Cup, with Laughing Prince next fancied. The favourite hit the front before half a furlong had been covered, and was never afterwards headed. Historic and Lau<rhin» Prince were his nearest attendants 0 entering the straight, but Vertigern came with a good run to finish four lengths behind Nightmarch, with Historic a head away, followed by Laughing Prince.
