PHAR LAP BEATEN.

WATERLINE VICTORIOUS.

SENSATION AT FLEMINGTON.

ATJT OFAY'S ASCOT VALE. STAKES. AUSTRALIAN CUP TO CARRY ON. MELBOURNE, March 8. The defeat of Phar Lap t>y another New Zealand-bred horse, Waterline, in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes, created a sensation at Flemington yesterday when the Victoria Racing Club's autumn meeting was concluded In fine weather. The race provided a stirring contest. Waterline looked as if he was beaten at the distance, but finished gamely under punishment, and defeated Phar Lap by a neck. The winner was accorded a wonderful ovation. This was his fifth win in Australia, and "Mr, S, A. Rawdon," who bought him from Sir Charles Clifford last winter for 2000 guineas, now shows a handsome profit -on his investment.

Phar Lap had not been defeated since Amounis defeated him by half a head in the Warwick Stakes, one mile, last August, and in the meantime he had won 14 races. His stake winnings now total £51,662.
