ACCIDENT TO OMATERE
The animal regatta of the. Pousonby Cruising Club was held on Saturday in ideal weather, and a steady h.'eeze from the Jiorth. Keen contests "Vere witnessed and the results were close, seconds only separating some of the competitors. A good field of ten started in the L and X class, Valeria, well handled by Jack MeWhirter, leading them home. Malua won on time. Queenie won the keel class by 32s from Speedwell. In the H class Omatere lost her bowsprit in a collision with Starloch at the Resolution mark, Spray winning on time. Doris won the V class on time, Surprise being first home 2m ahead of Wild Wave. Maratea sailed even better than her usual good form, and beat Manenc
by 2Jm. ~ ~ , There was a good fight for the line at the start of the T, X, and Y class, two being over before gunfire. Lois, wellplaced, crossed ahead, and led throughout. Fay ,and Sybila were only four seconds apart at the finish. Lois won easily. Another keen class was the / boats, their young skippers handling them with good judgment. Kitty was the winner of a close race. All events started and finished off St. Mary'B Bay. Mr. K. J. Kelly's big motor yacht Linda was flagship. The racing was handled in a most efficient manner, all events being sent off promptly to time. The officers for the day were: Starter, Mr. T. Quhin; judge, Mr. H. Kirkham; timekeeper, Mr. h. J. Kelly, recorder, Mr. H. R. Arthur. Keel Class.—This was the first to start, sent away at 2.30 sharp. Queenie led, followed hy Speedwell. Scout ami Eu alio in this order. Queenie and Speedwellmade good time on the lead dpwn to Resolution. On the bat out to White Light, Queenie forged a bit ahead, but Speedwell was always handy, with Semi Close up. The finish was : Queenie 4U 31m 7s Speedwell 4h 34m 9s, Scout 4h 3um 48b. Sic 4h 40m 225. Result: Queenie 1, Speedwell 2, Scout 3. H Class'.—-2.6-foo'tcrs: From a poor start Starlight led over the line, followed hy Starloch, Why Not, Omatere and Spray. At Resolution Starlight still led while .Starloch was a little ahead of Omatere. Jiist us these two rounded, Omatere s bowsprit fouled the niainsheet of Starloch and Omatere lost her bowsprit in the encounter. Omatere's skipper retired later, enterin'' a protest. Starloch and Spray had a great race all round, only 10 seconds separating them at the finish, which was: ! .Starloch, 4h 41m 10s, Spray 41l 41m 20s, Starlight 4h 42m 18s, Why Not 4h uOm 335. Result : Spray 1, Starloch 2, Why Not 3. r, and N Class.—2o and 22-footcrs— Ten boats lined up for the start of this class, and from a close go for the line, Marie crossed first, with Isabelle. Malua, Otira, Wairere," Valeria and Mowai following, and the other three handy. It was a lead down to Resolution, and all carried leading jibs. On the beat out to While Light, Valeria went into the lead, with Marie next and Wairere leading the others. The hnish was: Valeria 4h r>lm 12s. Marie 4h 43m oils, Wairere 4h 57m 555. Otira 5h Om 3.>s, Malua 5h Om 535, Doreen 5h 2m .!2s, Mowai 5h Sm 255, Matariki 5h 10m 335, Isabelle 5h 11m 30s. Wairangi 5h 10m 2oS. Result : Malua 1, Wairere 2, Valeria 3.
y Class. —From a good start Surprise was lirst awav. Ngaire was too keen and had to return, but did not lose much time. Wild Wave, Romance, Avro, Doris. Leveret and Rita followed in close order, Sea Crest being 4Jm late. Wild Wave and Surprise led in Ihe lirst round, with Romance, Doris and Avro next. On the second round Surprise passed Wild Wave, while Doris and Avro passed Romance. The linish was: Surprise, -Hi 13m 15s; Wild Wave, Hi 17m 17s; Doris, 4h 19m 30s; Avro, 4h 22m 5Cs; Romance. 4h 23ni 325: Leveret, 4h 31m Ss; Ngairc, 41i 41m IHs: Rita. 4h •12m os. Result: Doris 1, Wild Wave 2, Surprise 3. M and S Class. —Maratea was quickest lo move, followed by Menielu. Bungaree. Manene, Sceptre, Rangitiki, Ben Bolt and Swiftsure. Tlie three M class boats. Maratea, Manene and Menuitu. soon outpaced the 10-footers, the new boat Memutu heading Manene on the first round, but on (lie close haul to Bona buoy Manene sailed into second place. Sceptre and Bungaree led tlii! second division, some of which were Well strung out. The finish was : Maratea, Hi 27m 355; Manene, 41i 30m ss: Menuitu, 41i 31in 10s; Sceptre, 4h 32m 555; Bungaree, 4h 3(im ss; Rangitiki, 4h 39m 50s; Hen Bolt, -Hi 44m 20s. Result: Sceptre 1, Ben Bolt 2. Bungaree 3.
T, X ami Y. Classes. —All ten entries started in this race at 3.10 p.m. Alorte and Kita T. being over too soon. Lois led away, with Kangi. Fay, Sybila, Jupiter, Romance, Sea Dawn and Sea Pixie following. Sybila and Lois were leading at the first mark, with Fay, Kangi, and Alertc close up. On the lead to Watchman and Urn close haul to Shoal Bay, Lois opened out a big lead from Sybila and Fay. The finish was: Lois 4h 31m 575. Fay 4h 30m 3s, Sybila 4h 39m 7s, Sea Pixie 4h -Kim 455, Alert il\ 47m 335, Kangi 4h 55m 5Qs, Kita T. Oh 17m ss. Kesult: Lois 1, Sybila 2, Fay 3.
Z Class. —Another good field of ten lined up for the start of this class. The boys were very keen, and all were off within 40s of gunfire. Tio was first away, followed by Kitty, Ripple, Me Too, Trevie, Tere. Delphiiie, Di, Swastika, and Ngaio. All kept at close ..quarters' on the way to the first mark, but after this Kitty, Tio, and Mee Too opened out a lead which they maintained. The finish was timed: Kitty 4h 9m 4s. Tio 4h 10m 13s, Trevie 4h llin 435, Me Too Hi 13m 10s, Oi, 4h 13m 18s, Ngaio 4h 15m 14s. Ripple 4h 15m 355, Delphine 4h 10m 13s, Tere 4h 10m 475, Swastika, 4h 17m 555. Kesult: Kitty 1, Oi 11, Tio 3.
