oNE SECOND FINISH IN M CLASS.

The Devonport Yacht Club held their annual regatta on Saturday in ideal •sailing weather, a steady northerly riving tlie hoats a fair test on all Joints. The entries were good, all classes being represented from the 50footer Ariki to the seven-footers. All events started and finished off the Victoria wharf. Ariki led from the start in the big class and won the Duder Cup wSO seconds from Thelma. On the beat o ut to Rangitoto reef the lacing on 4riki's gaff carried away and the oeak of her mainsail was hanging loose for tlie rest of the race. Prize sailed well and was only beaten by five seconds on corrected time by Thelma. Starloch led the fleet in the 22, 24 and 26-foot class, but there was a lot of "off the wind" A vork and tho winner was Waiapu on the 20rii mark. The M class put up their usual close race, less than a minute separating Jlaratca, Maneno and Maroro in the first round. Tho finish was very close and exciting between Maratea and Maroro. Both laid for the line together, and 50 yards away from it Maroro's blue how was two or three feet ahead, hut Maratea had the weather berth and the shortest line to sail on. With sheets •nicely trimmed, the black boat Maratea crossed the line with a rush, getting the "Ml by a matter of 3ft or one second in time. The chews got a hearty cheer •from the crowd on the end of the wharf. So close was it that both skippers were in doubt as to the result until informed hy the officials. The course sailed by the M, V and S classes gave a short beat from the Bastion to the White Light, which helped the scratch boats to work off some of the handicaps, but the T, X and Y class -turned at the Sandspit mark, going thence to Resolution, a mark off Stanley Bay wharf which was almost a "soldiers" wind all round the course, and the prizes went to the long-timers. Ben Bolt (16m) won the V and S, Mighty Atom (10m) the T, X and Y,. and Dawn the 7-footers. A and B Class.—From a good start, Nga Toa was first away, followed by Prize,; Thelma, Ariki, Kotiri, and Yectis in that order. The course was round the Bastion,round Duder Spit buoy, back to Bastion, round mark off Stanley Bay, finishing off Victoria wharf. On the lead across to the Bastion, Nga Toa, Thelma, and Ariki were all together. On the beat out channel, Ariki took the lead and held it to the. finish. Passing Victoria wharf on the lead to Stanley Bay, Ariki was lm 5s ahead of Thelma, Nga Toa was 35m behind Thelma, and Prize 2m astern of Nga Toa. The finish was: Ariki (scr), 4h 5m 50s; Thelma (Jm), 4h 7m; Nga Toa

(2m), 4h 11m 50s; Prize (7£m), 4h 14m ss; Kotiri (12m), 4h 21m 9s; Vectis (23m), 4h 34m 355. Result: Ariki 1, Thelma 2, Prifce 3. H, L and N Class.—There was a big field in this race, Starloch getting away with the gun, followed closely by Marie, Celox, Spray, Valeria, Why Not, Mowai, Awatere, Wairere, Omatere. Starloch held the lead throughout, with Spray and Omatere close together in . second and third place. Valeria stood well over to Rangitot'o ? shore and beat all the 22-footers home. The finish was: Starloch, 4h 28m 355; Spray, 4h 31m;2s; Omatere, 4h 31m 255; Valeria, 4h 35m 30s; Why Not, 4h 36m 20s; Marie, 4h 38m 17s; Wairere, 4h 42m 40s; Waiapu,; 4h 45m . 21s; Malua, 4h 51m 15s; Mowai, 4h 51m 28s. Result: Waiapu. 1, Valeria 2, Spray 3. M Class.—Marbro was first away in this class, _ followed by Mawliiti, Maratea', Manu, Manene and Memutu. Maroro, Maratea and Manene were all close together on the l3ad to the Bastion, Maratea rounding, first. Marateit-improved'her lead on the beat to White Light. At Resolution Maratea led Maroro by 30s. The finish was: Maratea, 4h 2m 345; Maroro, 4h 2m 355; Manu, 4h 3m 465; Mawliiti, 4h 4m 16s; Manene, 41i 6m 575; Memutu, 4h 7m 15s. Result: Maratea 1, Maroro 2, Manu 3. V and S Class.—There was a good field in this race. Sea Crest was first away, followed by Waitoa, Romance, Swiftsure, Avro, Bungaree, Ngaire, Doris, Ben Bolt, Sceptre and Wild Wave over a minute late. Avro went into the lead at the Bastion and. was never headed. Wild' Wave worked into second place, with Sceptre, Waitoa and Ngaire close together. The finish was: Avro, 4h 18m 40s; Wild Wave, 4h 24m 30s; j Sceptre, 4h 25m'275; Waitoa, 4h 25m 475; Ngaire, 4h 26m Gs; Sea Crest, 4h 27m 545; Doris, 4h 28m 365; Ben Bolt, 4h 30m 41s;. Romance, 4h 31m 30s; Bungaree, 4h 32m' 50s; Rawhiti, 4h 35m 10s; Swiftsure, 4h 36m 265. Result: Ben Bolt 1, Waitoa 2, Ngaire 3. Swiftsure Reported that Bungaree and Rawhiti did not round the Bastion mark. T, X and Y Class.—Thirteen boats started in this race, making a pretty sight. Mighty Atom was first away, closely followed by Fay, Lois, Sybila, Joan, Eleanor, Sea Pixie, Meteor, Jupiter, Cariad and the others .close up. Lois started to wipe off some of the handicaps, and soon opened out a lead, with Sybila,-Joan and Fay next best, Mighty Atom leading 1 the second division. The finish was: Lois, 4h 17m 335, Sybila 4h 22m 325, Joan 4h 22m 535, Fay 4h 23m 325, Mighty Atom 4h 24m 28s, Sea Pixie 4h 27m 525, Meteor 4h 29m 235, Cariad 41i 32m 7s, Jupiter 4h 30m 40s. Result : Mighty Atom 1, Cariad 2, Sea Pixie 3. 7-Footers.—Midget, Wisliwynne and Dawn started over a short course, and the finish was-: Midget (W. Inkster) 4h 46m 20s, Wishwynne (W. Todd) 4h 47m 455, Dawn (Doug. Paterson), 4h 47m 475. Result: Dawn 1, Midget 2, Wishwynne 3. The officers for the day were:—Starter and timekeeper, Mr. E. Spraggon; judge," Mr. G. Miller; recorder, Mr. L. M. Wood. TAKAPUNA BOATING CLUB. The Takapuna Boating Club held a race on Saturday for the Z class. As the tide did not allow the usual course to be used, r,;! e boats started off ;Bayswater Beacon. Ihe finish was Trevic 4h 5m 13s, Me Too 4h 5m 225, Tio 4h 6m' lis, Kitty 4h 6m 475, Tere 4h 13m 7s.
