MELBOURNE, this day.
Newspapers are giving attention to the case of Robert McMahon, who is charged with the murder of Mona Griffiths, aged 12 years, at Bentleigh. McMahon, who Carried a swag into New South Wales, Was tracked down, detained and lined up for identification. He was released but still later was rearrested in Sydney and agajn paraded along with other prisoners for identification.. He was then definitely charged with •murder' and committed for trial. appears that the police are convinced they have got the wrong man. McMahon has been able to prove an alibi to the effect that he was actually in Leeton, New South Wales, on the precise date of the murder, but he mufit remain in custody formally until he appears before the - Criminal Court which has power to release him. After that he has_ no redress for wrongful arrest and imprisonment.
The body of Mona Griffiths was found last November in an empty house at Bentleigh. A gag was knotted tightly round her face, death being appai ently due to suffocation. The girl s crnnparnons saw her leave the playground with a man who was described.to the police by them.
