RACING AT ROTORUA.

THE ANNUAL MEETING. programme for to-morrow RECENT FORM REVIEWED. Tho annual meeting of the Rotorua Racing Club will open at Rotorua to-morrow, and if the weather is fine this popular fixture is sure to be well patronised, for good fields are engaged, and an excellent! day's sport should result The High-weight Handicap. The Pohutu High-weight Handicap forms tho opening event, and Steady Fire, who is at the head of the field, has shown plenty of pace in some of his races this season. He won over a mile at the Waikato spring meeting, and in a high-weight handicap at Thames he led for about a mile, having a good break on the field at that stage. Yalcuir won over eight and a half furlongs at Matamata on Saturday, scoring very .easily. First Lap was successful in a seven-furlong event at Te Rapa in the spring, finished third in the Paterangi Handicap, eight furlongs and a half at Waipa, and was fourth in a high-weight handicap at Thames. SubEditor was fourth in the Ferry Handicap, seven furlongs, and the Rangitoto Hack, nine furlongs, at the recent Takapuna meeting, and should be improved. Smithfield ran second to Gay Idea in the Kopu Handicap, six furlongs, at Thames, and occupied a similar position to Biddy's Boy in the Trial Handicap, seven furlongs, at Takapuna. Musquin was second to Valcuir at Matamata, and may be the best of tho others. Tho chief fancies may be VALCUIR SMITHFIELD-SUB-EDITOR. The Waimangu, Stakes. Tho Waimangu Stakes is a weight-for-age event rim over six furlongs, for three-year-olds and upwards that have not won a flat race at a totalisator meeting at time of starting. The majority have littb to their credit. Fraser showed up well at non-totalisator meetings recently, though he failed at Matamata last Saturday. Searcher ran second at Thames, while Gap Lap finished a good third in the Hinuera Handicap, six furlongs, at Matamata. Protomint was third in the President's Handicap, one mile, at Taumarunui, while he was second in the Matamata Hack Cup, one mile and a quarter, last Saturday. Abbey Dream finished third ■ in the Kopu Handicap, six furlongs, at Thames, and is a likely improver, while • Silene dead-heated for second place in the Moana Handicap, seven furlongs, at Takapuna. On recent form the public may go for SILENE GAY LAP PROTOMINT. The Mokoia Handicap. Eight are carded for the Mokoia Handicap. Volimond and Ti Tree have both been awarded 9.0. The former won the Takapuna Plate, seven furlongs, this season, and'finished fourth in the Fitzherbert Handicap, the open six furlongs, on the first day of the Manawatu meeting, while she occupied a similar position in the Aldworth Stakes, one mile and 137 yards, at Marton. Ti Tree scored over seven furlongs at the Takapuna spring meeting, and was third in the Christmas Handicap, one mile, at Ellerslie. Black Maire finished second to Hakanoa in the Walton Handicap, seven furlongs and a quarter, at Matamata last Saturday. The latter is also, engaged in this event, and both should go well. Tetrarchate won well over seven furlongs at Ellerslie, and ran fair races at Takapuna, which should have improved him. Protomint looks the best of those lower down. .The most favoured may be TETRARCHATE VOLIMOND HAKANOA. ' The Cup. Mosque, after his victory in the Summer Cup at Ellerslie, has pride of place in the Rotorua Cup. He, failed at Takapuna, but has been galloping well at Te Rapa since then. High Pitch won the Matamata Cup last Saturday, and is evidently again at his best. He should again go well. Standfast was second to him in that event, and is returning to form. When at his best he is a good sort. Clopton finished second in the Thames Cup, which is his best performance so far , in a mile and a quarter race. He was well beaten at Takapuna. Cruaahan showed good form in the spring, while Sir Mond looks the most likely of the remainder. The public may go for HIGH PITCH STANDFAST MOSQUE. Hot Springs Handicap. The largest field of the day is carded for the Hot Springs Handicap. Fraser, Searcher And Protomint have prior engagements, but if reserved for this race Fraser and Protomint should go well. Lord Val scored in the Hinuera Handicap, six furlongs, at Matamata last Saturday, and will be one of the popular fancies, while Rangikaha was only a head behind him. Laptown ran two good races at Thames, and was second in the Putaruru Stakes, five furlongs, at Matamata. Marechal looks the most likely of the others. The bulk of the investments may go on LORD VAL LAPTOWN RANGIKAHA. Geyser Hack Handicap. Sir Kay won over six furlongs at the Taumarunui meeting, and finished third to Karapoti and Pegaway in a similar distance event at Waipa. He is now top weight in the Geyser Handicap, and would only need to stay on to be hard to beat. King March won over a mile in Sydney, and has not raced for some months, but if at his best he will be very troublesome. King Win was third in a division of the Bardowie Handicap, six furlongs and a half, at' the Waikato Hunt meeting, and won the Trial Stakes, six furlongs, at the Waikato spring meeting. He was. only beaten by a head in the Turua Handicap, six furlongs, at Thames, so that ho gjs& performed well this season, for ha

has not raced much. Steady Fire is engaged in the High-weight Handicap earlier in the day. Miss Albyn showed a lot of pace when she won the Ohaupo Handicap, seven furlougs, at Te Awamutu, but she disappointed at Thames. Snow Princo was placed at Taumarunui, Thames and Matamata. Currajong scored over six furlongs at Matamata, and Gold Lily and Leasehold may have most friends of the remainder. The chief fancies may be SIR KAY i KING WIN KING MARCH. The Two-Year-Olds. Chief Jewel will not be sent to the meeting, and Lady Vane will be at the head of those engaged in the Arawa Park Stakes. She showed good form in tho spring, being third in the Avondale Stakes and tho Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie, while she was third in the Putaruru Stakes at Matamata last Saturday. Columba has shown a lot of speed in her races, and her second at Takapuna will ensure her a lot of friends. These two seem to dominate the situation, the others having little or no racing experience. Amber Link may be the best of them, and the public will probably select them in this order. COLUMBA LADY VANE AMBER LINK. The Tourist Handicap. The programme will conclude with the Tourist Handicap. Refresher has plenty of pace, and has raced fairly well recently, but he has his fair share of weight. Prince Val won Avell at Ellerslie and ran prominently for a good way in the Waharoa Handicap, eight furlongs and a half, at Matamata last Saturday. With 71b off his back ho is sure to go well. Sir Russell may find the distance a bit too short for him, while Royal Ruler won at his last start at Thames. Honiton raced well in the South at Christmas time, and finished third in the Suburban Handicap, six furlongs, at Takapuna. Billikins won at Thames, while of those lower down Tetrarchate and Sir Kay have prior engagements, but if reserved for this event should show up. The favourite division may be PRINCE VAL REFRESHER ROYAL RULER. The programme is as follows:— nK/j POHUTU HIGH-WEIGHT of ,rJ\J 140sovs. One mile. IN TWO EVENTS.

Sir Kay was not produced at the Matamata meeting last Saturday, but the Lord Quex gelding is in good order and will be in demand for his Eotorua engagements. On a firm track Sir Kay is a brilliant galloper, and with a bit of luck should soon win his way out of hack class. He has been paid up for in two races on the first day at Eotorua and is a possibility in whichever race lie is started in.
