RACING AT TARANAKI.

THE OPENING DAY. CUP TO VERTIGERN. LADY QUEX WINS SPRINT. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. The autumn meeting of the Taranaki jockey Club opened to-day in showery weather. The totalisator handled £11,723, compared with £21,422 for the first day last year, a decrease of £9098. Tenacre Wins Well. Of th© six horses which went out for the Waitara Hurdles, four carried within '£20 of cach other. Goblin Market and Manly were tho ecratchings, and the order of the backing was Democratic, Full Mark, Omco, Royal Acre, Tenacre and Denier. The fieid got away well and Denier, Democratic, Full Mark and Tenacre led over tho first fence. Passing the stand the first time the order was J>enier, Tenacre, Full Mark and Royal Acre, with Omeo a good distance back. When five furlongs from home, Full Mark went to the front, and Tenacre joined him at the half-mile, with Royal Acre the most prominent of the others. The leaders entered the straight on terms, three lengths clear of Royal Acre, Tcnacre winning by' three lengths from Full Mark, with Royal Acre five lengths away, third.

11l 111 l I 11 | II - The Juvenile Handicap. For the Ngamotu juvenile Handicap, Isa, Gibraltar and Ripple Song were scratched. Easter Time was favourite, with Peter Jackson and Merry Cry next best supported. Paratoo was first to show out from a fair start, with. Impetuous, Easter Time and Merry Cry next. Impetuous soon took charge from Easter Time, Paratoo and Peter Jackson, with Open Cheque next. Easter Time joined Impetuous at the half-mile and the pair led Paratoo, Peter Jackson and Open Cheque into the straight. In a good finish Paratoo beat Easter Time by half a head, with Impetuous two lengths away. Peter Jackson was fourth. The Flying Handicap. Ridgemount, Malayan and Silver Rule dropped out of the Flying Handicap, but the remainder constituted a classic field, and a great race ensued. Lady Quex was a strong favourite, and Hunting Cry was second choice. Tenterden and Consent were first to show out when the field was fairly, under way, but Lady Quex and Hunting Cry followed closely, the latter taking first place early in the race. Passing the half-mile Bayacre, Consent and Tenterden was the order, with Lady Quex, Hunting Cry, Gold Dawn following. The leaders entered the straight together, with Lady Quex and Hunting Cry gradually getting into position for the run home. Lady, Quex then came through to win by nearly two lengths from Hunting Cry, heads only separating the next. Dead Heat for Second. The three non-starters in the Moturoa Electric Hack Handicap were Richland, Compulsory and Gibraltar. Orby's Choice was smartest out of the barrier and led Miss Chatter, Animated and Gold Gleam. The last-named soon moved up to the front from Royal Bengal, Moatoa and Orby's Choice, and entering the straight the order was Orby's Choice, Gold Gleam, Bon Eve and Miss Chatter, with Gaysogne most prominent of the others. In a good finish Bon Eve won by a length from Moatoa and Orby's Choice, who deadheated for second place, with Royal Bengal half a length away next. The Chief Event. A field of eleven faced the starter for the Taranaki Cup, the defections being Bright Glow, Silvermine, The Swell and Maui. In the Shade carried most money, with Otairi and Concentrate also well supported. High Falutin' got the worst or the start and entering the straight the first time Otairi led Royal Parad:, with Chopin, The Hawk and Vertigeru following. Passing the stand Vertigern had taken the lead and was followed by Royal Parade, First Acre, Chopin, Otairi and The Hawk, with White Fang at the back. The leaders still held their place down the back stretch, but on passing the five-furlong post High Falutin' had taken charge and held his place as the field entered the straight. Once in line Vertigern challenged and won by a neck from High Falutin', with In the Shade a couple of lengths back. First Acre was fourth. Monalof Wins Nicely. Manawhenua, Saltpot, Latakia and Potoleer were the scratchiugs in the Qkato Hack Handicap, and of the ten left in Crennatown wag best backed, with Joyspear ar-T Tentcrll a Is*

supported. The latter got badly away, but when tlie field had settled down the order was Joy spear, Monalof, Solange, Gaenapper, Rich Harvest and Werata. Passing the five-furlong post Monalof was in.front on the rails.,with. Tentcall next. The field was bunchcd entering the straight and the leaders were never headed, Monalof leading Tentcall by i three-quarters of a length, with Banbridge a length away. Crcnnatown wa«s fourth. The High-weight Handicap. In a field of eight for the Minii Highweight, Paiko carried most money, with Melissa and Calamine next fancied. From a good start Chief Link was first out followed by Calapat, Green Linnet, Melissa and Paiko. At the end of a furlong Green Linnet had taken charge, while at the half-mile Calapat was on terms with Green Linnet, just ahead of Melissa and Chief Link, who were also racing together, followed by Monsog.ne. In the run home Chief Link challenged anrl won by a length from Melissa, with Calamine, who finished very fast on the outside, only a neck away. Calapat was fourth. The Concluding Event. There were six withdrawals from the Timaru Hack Handicap, leaving a field of eight, in which Arikira was a firm favourite, Chief Savage, Royal Finance and Tea Queen being best backed of the others. Silver Rule, Tea Queen and Chief Savage were the early leaders. At the half-mile Chief Savage had gone up second, while Singer and Tea Queen were handy with Anbridge running up fast. At the three-furlong post the oi'der was Silver Rule, Tea Queen, Chief Savage, Royal Finance and Singer. Silver Rule led into the straight, but in a good finish Tea Queen gained the verdict by a couple of lengths from Chief Savage, while Singer was nearly a length away, third. WORKING' WELL.

Since racing at the Takapuna meeting Ho wick has been working well at headquarters and yesterday morning the Valkyrian gelding registered a good gallop over six furlongs. He has not had much racing experience, hut is a hack that should he capable of winning over sprint distances around the country wheal properly eeaaonejl.
