WILDING SHIELD CHALLENGE. ROUND THE CLUBS. (By HALF-VOLLEY.) Auckland's Wilding Shield Challenge, having been withdrawn for this season, Canterbury have put in a challenge for the inter-provincial trophy, and the match against Wellington (holders) will he played on Friday and Saturday next. Wellington's team is already announced— X. B. C. Wilson, D. G. France, A.. L. France and A. E. Sandral, with Ferkins and Eoussel as emergencies. Canterbury will presumably be represented by'Angas, Seay and Patterson — who else will" be in the team can only l-*3 conjectured, but X will pick Glanville or Barnett. Eeinuera Champlonsmps. A revibw of the Remuera Club's championship matches to date shows that good! progress has been made Avith the different club events, though they will still have to be pushed on at' a fair rate if the final stages are to be reached before the end of the daylight saving period. In the men's singles the draw has run tfue to form. Eight players are now leftrr-Bartleet meets Griffiths in the first Quarter; the latter player, by the way, r must have been: given: something of affright by Nigel Wilson, whom he beat o—7, 7—5. Wilson, deserves •oreat credit for chasing the experienced 'Griffiths so hard. Lamb meets Sturt in the second quarter, where: Sturt may be expected to repeat his win of 'the Auckland* championship meeting.. In the third quarter Robinson meets Charters—the meeting of these two lefthanders .(though, of course,-. Charters should win) will certainly produce some fireworks." I remember Robinson chasincr Glanville the full length of five sets when the? New Zealand championships were held in Auckland. In the fourth quarter jlcArthur, who beat Brinsden by default, meets A. C. Stedman. The 'semi-final| shouldsee Bartleet play Sturt and" Charters play Stedman. In the* men's doubles Bartleet and Robson have already reached the semifinal without losing a set, and meet the winners "of the match, Griffiths and i Brinsden ?v. J. Stedman and Thomson. In the other half Watkiris and Lamb, having "eliminated Macfarlane and Ohlson, meet the winners' of Stedman and Sturt v. Lucas and Milne. The ladies' singles are ja' long way behind, and the committee . will: have to hurry this event up if they want to complete it reasonably early. All the leading players are still in;- the only noteworthy" match was that between Miss Marion Macfarlane '"and Miss Betty Griffiths, ?where the fatter player took the second set an,d' : nfade Miss Macfarlane work hard to catch the last set. at f—4. The ladies' doubles is also a little, slow in being completed. Miss Ramsay and Mrs; Napier are the only'pair to have reached the semi-final. . ■ In the "combined doubles W. G.. Watkins and • Miss R. Taylor are the ' top semi-final, where they will probably encounter A. S. Lamb and Miss Roberton. In the other semi-final Ohlson and Mrs. Robson are through, and will probably meet Miss Macfarlane and Macfarlane. . • v Parnell Matches. ' The Parnell men's singles still has 13 players dfiti, including Lamb, Brown, Coates, Aldred, Chalmers and Boardman. In the men's .doubles there are several second-round matches still to be played. Williamsfand Coateg.lookrthe most likely winners .tif this event- ... The ladies' singles looks..as iif it will: again Be contested byV\Miss M. Potter and Miss P. Frankham, neither of whont'has so far lost more than three games in; a match in this- event. The ladies' doubles has reached the semi-final stage. Mrs. Leys and Mrs. Pope play Misses ' Sutherland and Darling in thfr one semi-final, while Mrs. Herrick and Miss Frankham play Misses Potter and Fearnley: in the other. The winners of the second semi-final should win the event. -The combined doubles still has 11 pairs'', in, and is_ fairly open, all .the seeded pairs still surviving.> "A',' Grade Match onVSaturday. The Auckland : Association's, "A" grade' rnatches;in the Garo Memorial Bowl com-, petition^will' be, resumed.; at ; Stanley; Street on Saturday;; next, .when CampbellPark meet ParriellV in. the semi-final, to decide which, of the two clubs, shall meet Eden and Epsom :in . the final. The ultimate winner wiirplay 'off with Remuera. Against''Campbell Park, whose team is very keen on making the best possible showing" on the occasion of their first, v season in "A" grade tennis/ Parnell will have to'field its best available team. .The older club should win, but Will not need to takef things too easily. The following' Saturday the winners will probably play .; off with Eden - and Epsom in the final. The fixture, however, is a tentative one meanwhile until the dates of'the forthcoming matches against Taranaki and Bay' of Plenty, are finalisedi . ; . : • • *. ladder Activities., A number of ladder matches have been played during the season, and the Auckland ladders have been consequently considerably changed.
