SUCCESS OF N.Z. HORSES. NELSON McCORMACK AND LOCANDA PRINCE. PERTH, January 27. The classic events of 1931 will take place at Brennan Park on March 7 and March 28. On the first mentioned date the W. A. Trotting Derby of loOsovs, a mile and a quarter, will take place, while on March 28 the Sires' Produce Stakes of 500sovs, nine furlongs, will.be held. There has been a noticeable improvement in the class of three-year-olds this year. Of the batch of youngsters that will participate in these races Prince Loloma looks like performing with credit in the classics. In his first start in the metropolis on December 20 he was successful at a 2.23J gait. He has shown better time in training. Lord Percy, another youngster who may perform well, has also shown early speed in exercise trials; likewise Princess Fornia, who recently ran half a mile in 1.8. Prince Loloma is by Prince Derby from ia W.A. Trotting Cup winner in Loloma; Lord Percy is by Percy from Saucy Girl, who also won a Christmas Cup; and Princess Fornia is by Prince Derby from that good mare Miss California, who is the dam of an Easter Cup winner in Seattle and the four-year-old Fawn Childe, who was third to Tommy Dillon and Little Edna at a 2.10J gait in the last W.A. Trotting Cup. There arc thirty-seven horses in the Sires' Produce Stakes and all of them were reared in this State. The owner of the sire of the winner of this race wins 50sovs, the breeder of the winner oOsovs, the owner of the winner 280sovs, the owner of the second horse SOsovs, the owner of the third horse 28sovs, and the owner of the fourth horse 12sovs. The record time for the W.A. Trotting Derby is held by the 1920 winner Katie Wood (2.223), while the fastest winning time in a Sires' Produce Stakes is credited to the 1927 winner Admiral's Child (2.214). The Derby has been in competition since 1917, but the other classic only 6ince 1925. Of the six Sires' Produce Stakes held, the first four have gone to Victorian-bred horses in Alto Childe, Larimda, Admiral's Child and North wood Lady. The other Sires' Produco Stakes have been won by locally-bred horses in Willoweliflfe (2.28) and Perry's Son (2.23). The W.A. Trotting Association will hold its Easter Carnival on Saturday. April 4, and Monday, April G. On April 4 the chief race will be the Easter Cup of 400sovs, which, like the W.A. Trotting Cup, Will be run in heats and final. Horses holding placed performances of 2.19 and better will be eligible and the race, as in past years, will be held ov'er eleven furlongs. The race has never previously been restricted to such a fast class. Antarctica won the race last year at a 2.14J gait. The Easter Handicap of 200sovs, o? two miles, will come in for most interest on the second night of the carnival. It is open to horses with placed performances of 2.21 and better. Mulavon, the Sydney performer, won the event last I year on a track slightly affected by ! rain. Ho travelled at a 2.221 rate. Trotting patrons in Western Aus- | tralia had a feast of trotting over the week-end. There was a meeting at Brennan Park on Saturd:'-* evening--seven races —while on the Monday night the Fremantle Trotting Club conducted a fixture. Considering the depressed times good attendances were registered at these meetings and keen interest was taken by the followers of the sport. The fastest time of the meeting was credited to the ex-New Zealand pacer Nelson McCormack (2.12}), who won against a field of 2.20 pacers over 13 furlongs from a 2.17J mark at Brennan Park. He paced at a 2.162 clip. The other fast class race on the programme at this venue also was won by an ex-New Zealand horse in Locanda Prince, who, like Nelson McCormack, holds a record of 2.12 J. Locanda Prince travelled at a 2.18} gait. Other winners at the Perth meeting were Romeo Lass (State Handicap), a 2.27 gait; Leo Huon, 15 years of age, at a 2.21 i rate; Laundress, 2.203,° the dam of a very fast locallybred pacer in Monty. Blue; Miss Priscilla, 2.21, and Equator, a City Handicap winner, who recorded a 2.20 clip. None of the winners at this meeting was under 10 years of age. At the I"remantlo meeting another New Zealander in Great Storm (by Great Audubon) won at a 2.19} rate over 13 furlongs. His win was well deserved. A locallybred mare in Mimi, who holds the I'remantle course record of 2,17, caught the judge's eye and won by 15 yards at a 2.20} gait. Other winenrs were Lady Ilunga (State Handicap), 2.25}; Post Girl (Trotters' Handicap), 2.20}; Beach, 2.20}; and Idol Chimes, 2.22. In winning the Trotters' Handicap Post Girl advanced the Rodney a further stage. The present point positions are: Woodland Don 11. Regina and Post Girl 0, Dora Wood, Gray Donald and All Alone 5, Happy Alto 3, Maurison, Gertie Hawk 1. The competition terminates with the September meeting of the Fremantle Club. First horses in Trotters' Handicaps at this meeting awarded 5 points, second horses 3 points, and third horses 1 point. The youngest horse to prove successful at the Fremantle meeting in question was Lady Hunga, who is five years old; the other winners were aged.
