SUSTENANCE PAYMENTS.
CONSIDERATION BY BOARD
FINALISING DETAILS OF SCHEME.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Monday.
Many aspects of the unemployment problem have engaged the attention of the Unemployment Board since it resumed its sittings on January G, and it is expected that rules governing the payment of sustenance will be finalised within the next few days. These have been reviewed by the board and referred to a special sub-committee, which .conferred all day to-day under the chairmanship of the Minister of Labour, Hon. S. G. Smith. No announcement concerning the exact nature of the work being done by the board has been made since the holidays, apart from the statement that it is engaged upon the question of sustenance payments. It Avas intimated before Christmas that the board would not be able to pay any sustenance until after the beginning of February, and it appears that the board has been spending most of its time upon this question and others of minor importance. Consideration is still being given to the operation of the board's second relief scheme, under which it was agreed to pay subsidies on wages. It was stated by the Minister of Labour to-day that several applications for increased allocations had been received particularly from country districts. After the scheme became better known it should be recognised in the country districts that a great chance was offering to get men employed on development works. j
