Attitude.

UNEMPLOYMENT IN SYDNEY.

(United P.A.—Elcctric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 12 noon.) - SYDNEY, this day. An extraordinary position has arisen in regard to the rationing of work in Sydney. Some of the Union officials who urged, the Government to insert in the Arbitration Amendment Bill a clause prohibiting rationing are now petitioning emto disregard the provision. Employers in the metal trades have refused to agree to do this, and the result will be serious for employees, 3500 of ployers to disregard the provision.

The Victorian Labour Ministry lias decided that rationing is preferable to dismissals in the Railway Department. Rationing tyegan to-clay with 2000 single men. Later .the scheme will be applied to more than 0000 employees.

PAY WITHOUT WORK.

NEW SOUTH WALES RAILWAYS

SYDNEY, January 7,

The New South Wales Xiailway Commissioners announce the relntroductipn by the Government of the 4-1 hours week on the rail ays, wl-ich will involve an added expenditure of £475,000 a year.

A large number of men are working under the Federal awards, which prescribe 48 hours for the working week. Thus they will receive pay for four hours not worked.

It is anticipated that the deiicit on the railways by June 30 will be £4,000,000.
