MANUREWA TOWN BOARD.
The Manurewa Town Board held its usual fortnightly meeting last evening, the chairman, Mr. W. J. Ferguson, presiding. Theatre - Improvements.—The chairman reported that he and Messrs. C. A. Fawcett, A. Woolley, and the building inspector,, Mr. Willis, had made an inspection of the theatre to ascertain what improvements were necessary as a precaution against fire. Unfortunately, the proprietor had not attended as arranged, and accordingly very little progress had been made towards a settlement of the matter. Mr. F. H. Barnard said that the building inspector was not satisfied that the building was safe, and therefore the board was not justified in granting a license, it was decided to write to the proprietor expressing astonishment at his failure to keep the appointment, together with his building adviser, as arranged. Failing a satisfactory reply, the committee was empowered to employ a qualified architect to inspect the building and furnish a report. Drainage Nuisance.—A resident of Weymouth Road wrote complaining that sewerage emptying into a watercourse through the railway reserve was contaminating water used by stock. It was decided to ask the health inspector to furnish a report on the matter, and Messrs. A. Woolley and J. Whitton were appointed to act after the receipt of the report. Great South Road.—The foreman, Mr. R. Forbes, was instructed to proceed with the work of draining the water-tables of Great South Road, through the township area, subject to arrangement with the Highways Board engineer. Town Planning.—A letter received from the Town Planning Institute of New Zealand, enclosing a copy of its journal, "Community Planning/' and inviting the board to enrol as an honorary member at an annual fee of one guinea, drew forth some severe criticism from Mr. C. A. Fawcett. He expressed the opinion that the whole thing had been foisted on the board, and that it was only another addition to the Civil Service. He considered that the community planning scheme was useless unless it was universal, and he felt decidedly opposed to having anything to do with it. After considerable discussion it was decided to take no action. Jellicoe Park Reserve. —It was decided to call tenders for the grazing of Jellicoe Park reserve. The reserves committee was requested to draw up the conditions of lease for consideration at the next meeting of the board.
