TEST CRICKET.

MORE RECORDS.

South Africa Score 513 for

Eight Wickets.

ENGLAND 98 TOE ONE.

{United PiA.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright)

(Received 11 a.m.) CAPETOWN, January 2. Further Test records were shattered on the Newlands wicket when, before 12,000 spectators, South Africa demonstrated the Avealth of their batting talent, and revealed how ordinary was the English attack. The innings was declared at 513 for eight wickets, which is a record. Taylor, demonstrating his irresistible mastery, secured his seventh Test century and, with Catterall, was associated in a bright and forceful partnership, yielding 148 runs in 108 minutes, breaking the record for the South African fourth-wicket stand within the Union. The wicket, though easy, was crumbling. Chapman called on' all his resources, especially his slow spin bowlers, but without avail, the batsmen meting out the same punishment to all the attack. When Taylor for 117, after 179 minutes, his score included 16 boundaries. The remaining batsmen were obviously under instructions to hit out and they threw away their wickets until Deane declared at tea. Hammond and Wyatt grimly set about the task of wearing down the attack. Hammond's toe was troublesome and a runner was used. Caution was the keynote of the English batting, but the score mounted steadily until McMillan, the slow epin bowler, broke a promising partnership at 75. Leyland and Hammond safely played out time. It was officially announced that Sandham will not participate further in the tour. An X-ray examination revealed a broken bone in the ankle. " Hammond kept wickets to-day, Duckworth haying broken a ligament in his right hand yesterday. Scores: — SOUTH AFRICA.—First Innings.
