RACES AT ELLERSLIE.
The settled weather "of the past few days presages an enjoyable New Year s Day for the thousands of Aucklanders to whom the season is still one ot festivity and carnival. Every taste is catered for in- the attractions that are offered to holiday-makers.
There is the irresistible call of the beacli and the open road, there are boating outings, yachting cruises, ferry excursions, trips by rail, visits to parks and reserves, and many sporting events. To-day the summer meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club is being finished at Alexandra Park, and to-night broadsiding contests will "be- held at Western Springs Stadium. To-morrow there will be races- at Ellerslie, a_ regatta at Whangarei, cricket matches at Eden Park between Auckland and North Auckland, and an Auckland team and Pukekohe, and the C grade tennis championship on the Domain courts. The Auckland Racing Club's meeting will end on Friday, and on Saturday there will be another broadsiding meeting at Western Springs Stadium. The hours observed by retail shops will be the same as were adopted during the Christmas week. Shops to-night will remain open until 10 o'clock, and to-morrow and Friday will be close holidays. There- will be. a general reopening on Saturday morning. Banks will be closed on New Year's Day and on Friday.
Several watch-night services of a religious character will be held in the city and suburbs to mark the arrival of the New Year. Details are advertised.
