MURDER CHARGE.

Tramp Committed for Trial in

Victoria.

SCHOOLGIRL'S DEATH

MELBOURNE, December 30,

The coroner held an inquest concerning the death of Mena Griffiths, aged 12, who was found dead at Ormond, oh November 10. After hearing evidence he committed Robert McMahon for trial on a charge of murder.

Detectives, with little to help them, arrested McMahon in Sydney. He is an ordinary tramp of rugged appearance and is a labourer. It is alleged that a bloodstained shirt was found in his swag. Two women witnesses and'also one man identified McMahon as the man who escorted two children from <a public park on November 9, one of whom, Mena Griffiths, is now dead.

The girl's mother caused a dramatic scene at the conclusion of her evidence. She shouted several times: "Let me get at him." - She was assisted from the Court in a state of collapse.

A cablegram from Melbourne on November 10 stated: The body of a girl aged 12 was found in an empty house. A gag was knotted tightly round her face, death apparently having been due to suffocation. The girl's companions saw her leave a playground with a man, who has been described to the police.
