AUCKLAND TROTS.

THE G.N. DERBY.

FAVOURITE BEATEN.

MACHINE GUN'S CHAMPION.

EKAWAH TAKES THE RANFURLY,

As on the opening day, the sport at -llexandra Park yesterday, when the Auckland Trotting Club held the second of the three days' summer carnival was of the highest standard. Race after race n reused great excitement, particularly the contests for the Champion Handicap, won by Machine Gun, and the Epsom Trot, which went to Maxegin. The weather conditions were ideal, the track in the best possible order, while the attendance reached 11,000, an increase in numbers over the attendance oa the middle day last year. As usual, the management of the meeting left no room for complaint.

The totalisator turnover showed a decrease compared with the-second day last year, but this was due to a great extent by the drop in the Derby betting. Last year's Derby was a keen betting race, but yesterday only two of the starters had. any chance. The sum handled yesterday was £39,503 10/, compared with £52,256 10/ last year, a decrease of £12,752 10/. ,The decrease for the two days was £18,999 10/. Below are details of the events not fully described' in the ordinary, edition of the yesterdays—

The Classic Event. The scratching of Plying Cloud and Worthy Chief left only five to go to the post for the Great Northern Trotting Derby. Arethusa (£l9b'7) was favourite with the bracket Red Shadow-Eawhitiroa (£1033) and Kewpie'e Triumph ( £333) next best backed. Great Fame and Eawhitiroa broke at the start. Arethusa took the lead early, attended by Red Shadow, and then came Kewpie's Triumph, Eawhitiroa, and Great Fame. At the end of a round Arethusa and E«d Shadow were together in front, with Kewpie's Triumph and Eawhitiroa on terms about ten lengths further back. ,Arethusa led along the back from Red Shadow, with Kewpie'e Triumph and Eawhitiroa together. There was no change crossing the top and Arethusa showed the way into the straight from Red Shadow, Kewpie's Triumph, and Rawhitivoa. A o-reat finish between Red Shadow and Arethusa resulted in favour of Red Shadow by a short neck. Kewpie's Triumph was eight lengths away third, with Kawhitiroa in fourth place.

Favourite Wins At Last. Proud Dillon and. Sir Guy were not harnessed up for the Dominion Handicap, leaving seven candidates to contest the events. When the public got to work tliey made Tony Victor ( £1335) favourite, next in demand being Hal Chimes (£981) and Country King ( £640). Hal Chimes was slow to move and passing the stand Country King, led Warspite, Purser, Gang Awa', Brutus, and Tony Victor, with Hal Chimes next. Country King and Warspite still had charge the next time round from Gang Awa' and Purser, with Brutus and Tony Victor handy, and the order was unchanged along the back. As they crossed, the top Country King was showing the way to Gang Awa 5 , Warspite, and Purser, with Tony Victor close up behind them. The last-named took charge turning for home, and went on to win easily by three lengths from Country King, who beat Purser by two lengths. Warspite was fourth, and then came Hal Chimes, Gang Awa' and Brutus. Tony Victor was the first favourite of the day to score. Sir Author Successful. When/ the field paraded for the Summer Handicap, Logan's Pride was missing, and in a good betting race Sir Author (£1395) got most support, with Free Advice (£1296) and Warplane (£748) next best backed, and the public were right on the. mark. Sir Author led past the stand the first time from Gold Dial, Stanmoor, Genuine and Free Advice, then came Pageant, Reremai and Florent. The Abbey broke some of his gear, and .was pulled up. When they came round the second time Sir Author was still in. front, with Gold Dial, Warplane, Stanmoor and Genuine next, then followed Free Advice, Pageant and Eeremai. There was no change in the positions alog the back, and Free Advice was just behind Sir Guy afc they turned for home, with Warplane, Gold Dial and Genuine all handy. A good finish saw Sir Guy last long enough to beat Free Advice by a head, with Genuine two lengths and a half away. Pageant was fourth, fok lowed by. Warplane, Reremai, Gold Dial and Stanmoor.

Favourite Beaten in Epsom. All acceptors lined up for the Epsom Handicap, a two-mile event for straightout ' trotters, in which most money (£1180) came for Ukulele Lady, while Maxegin (£1152) and Tonic (£706) were also in good request. Mutu, Ukulele Lady and Gold Sovereign began best, then came Etta Cole and Maxegin, but passing the stand Ukulele Lady was in front, with Maxegin, Mutu, Akenehi, Peter McKinney and Etta Cole next. Maxegin -had chai-ge the next time round, with Ukulele Lady, Mutu, Akenehi, Peter McKinney and Gold Sovereign following, and they raced along the back and across the top in that order. Turning for home Maxegin was still going nicely in the lead, with Ukulele Lady, Akenehi, Mutu and Peter McKinney racing as named, and he was not troubled to win by one length and a quarter from Ukulele who beat Mutu by three lengths. Peter McKinney was next, followed by Akenehi, Gold Sovereign, John Mauritious and Native

fcltar. Backers Go Home Happier. All paraded for the Ranfurly Handicap, with which the day's sport concluded. Enawah (£1300) was most favoured, and Belle Axworthy (£1169) and Sir Guy (£1019) were next best Lacked. Queen Elizabeth carried 'fill, and was paying over a third of a, century to win. Gang Awa' was soon in, front from Nella Dillon, Joy Bird, Country Xing, Proud Dillon, Queen Elizabeth and Enawah, while Belle Axworthy broke in the first furlong and completely settled her chances. Passing the stands the order was Gang Awa', Proud Dillon, Nclja Dillon, Enawah, Country King, Queen Elizabeth, Joy Bird and Great .Delight. There was no change along the back and across the top. Proud Dilltin v .is first to turn for home from Enawah, Awa' and Queen Elizabeth.

Enawah then drew out and beat Queen Elizabeth by two lengths, with Proud Dillon a head away. Then came Gang Awa', Joy Bird, Nella Dillon, Country King and The Abbey. GREAT DERBY FINISH,

For weeks past the clash between Red Shadow and Arethusa in the Great Northern Derby lias been looked forward to and up till Saturday last it was doubtful which of the pair would start favourite. However, on Saturday Arethusa gave Red Shadow 12yds and a beating over a mile and a quarter and this had the effect of seeing her start a very hot proposition in the Derby. But the first day's form did not work out correctly and instead of Arethusa again beating Red Shadow, the colt turned the tables and downed her by a short neck after a wonderful race between the pair. They left the mark together and at no stage of the race was there more than a length between them, and for most of the way they raced head and head. Arethusa had a very slight advantage, at the home turn, but Red Shadow was soon level, and the pair fought out a great finish, the verdict going to «X. Bryce's drive by a short head. Watching the race it looked as though Arethusa had Red Shadow bothered a long way from home but M. Holmes did not take advantage of it and send the filly along. Kewpie's Triumph went a useful race to get third, but the leading pair were always up to a dozen lengths in front of the others. Rawhitiroa and Great Fame both broke up badly at the start and were too far back when they settled down to have any chance.
